Overmedication Nation

Bolded are usually good.

It's the Big Pharma stuff like SSRIs-antidepressants that are the bad stuff. They are the #1 prescribed prescription drug in the world now also.

Tell me you've never been clinically depressed without telling me you've never been clinically depressed.

Ever think about what that term really means? It's like "bro, I checked out your article and I approve it, will you approve my article now bro!?"

"You scratch my back and I will scratch yours." - peer reviewed.

This is patently untrue. I work in academic publishing and have seen thousands of reviews, and this does not describe the process at all.

I’m the PP who mentioned statins. There is nothing wrong with them if you really need them. It seems like a lot of people need them though. So, I wonder if there is a way to not need them.

Well, yes, if we changed the standard American diet, many people would not need statins. But people either don't want to or are unable to do so.

I changed my diet. Didn’t help with any of the health issues. Must be nice not to have any real health concerns.

Were your health issues statin-related? That is what is being addressed here. And of course some people will need them, but a better diet could have a major effect for others. This is not new or shocking information.

Don’t listen to them. They life their lives in this sort of low morality, transactional, everyone’s out to get me type way. They truly do not understand that there are people out there who enjoy research and innovation and truly want to investigate, and process, and publish exciting new science for the sake of publishing exciting new science.

It is mind-blowing that someone educated believes that this is how peer review works.

Are you not actually educated? Or is this just a front in the MAHA comms campaign for you?

I think people who don’t trust doctors and western medicine should honestly stop using doctors and western medicine. You don’t like it, you don’t trust it, you think the medication is a scam to garner profit for both the drug company AND the prescribing doctor, you think the doctors and scientists are just scratching each others backs instead of actually publishing solid new research. I get it. But you shouldn’t be able to fight so hard to shut down medical research and shut down the pharmaceutical companies and then come in for bypass surgery and want the latest surgical technology, a western medicine trained cardiac surgeon, and anesthesia drugs during your procedure that were created by scientific research and now are being manufactured by Big Pharma. You want all those things to be available at a moments notice for you after your heart attack after you’ve spent your time rallying to have those things shut down, cut any funding for those things, and accused the people who work on those things of being crooks. Like, GTFO you don’t even know what you’re talking about. By the way, we don’t refuse care to you, because it’s against the law. If we are getting the government hand out of health care , let’s start right there with that law.

I love medicine and I’m grateful we have it.

This conversation isn't about whether people love medicine. I love medicine. It's whether certain medications in the US are overprescribed in general. We aren't exactly healthier in the US. While medications on an individual level are very helpful, it's not crazy to wonder if there might be an additional route - in addition to the medications - that might improve our outcomes.

All paid for by the drug companies.

Nope. Again Bobby, go home.

Statins have saved millions of lives. The way you find out that you needed them is after the heart attack.

Yep. Life expectancy is up since statins were introduced in the 80s. Thank god.

We have the worst heart disease in the world. Why? Pharma profits.

Nope. Too much saturated fat in the diet and heredity. It's not just about diet.

So what do you all take on this thread?

I'm 50 and I don't take anything. Not even vitamins. I follow my doctor's advice but I don't have anything prescribed.

50 is really young. You shouldn’t be taking anything at that age.

I wasn't either at 50. I am at 65, due to diseases that would have killed me 8 years ago.

There's a MAHA troll on this thread who is demonstrating the IQ level of these idiots. He/ she thinks they are clever and above all this, but they do not realize how dumb they look with these statements.
