Girl with 1370 SAT gets in to 5 Ivies

Anonymous
The Haitian American community has hustle, drive and grit. She was raised in a two parent household. Both parents have college degrees.

In my experience those with hustle, drive and grit always out perform those with perfect scores.

It’s hilarious how many of y’all are pretending that the main difference between a 1370 and a 1500+ isn’t just taking the test multiple times (and most of your kids would need tutoring to achieve that increase, so get real).

Not going to state the obvious here...

You think that both of these facts or true:

* 1370 and 1500 the same score up to random variation.
* But most people who try wouldn't observe that result

....OK?

It's hilarious that you think you know best what students the ivy League should admit to their classes. You're just an anonymous poster on dcum like the rest of us. What makes you better qualified than an experienced admissions team to decide who should go to the University of Pennsylvania or any other school?

Maybe they just liked her better than the 1550s. Can kinda see why.

Yes. Because most people posting on here had to hold their kids’ hands to even get to the 1300s. Those kids will need tutoring to increase their scores substantially. Smart (unprepped) kids might get a 1370 their first time, but now that they have seen the format of the test they’re likely to substantially increase their score merely by taking it a second time.

The fact that this isn’t obvious to you indicates you belong in that first group.

Are you stupid? I’m not the one complaining about who they DID admit. My comment was clearly a defense of this girl’s admission while mocking the whiny parents complaining about it.

What a stupid argument about test scores and prep v no prep. There is nothing that indicates how many times or prep this kid did. Nothing about her psat. She could have been prepped and could have had many exams. We don’t know and cannot assume anything more than her reported score which is not a score anyone would be telling an unhooked applicant will get them into 5 ivies.

Keep crying about it. Sorry you didn’t get the memo that no one is impressed that your little Larla learned how to take the SAT.

Good for her.

If mediocre white kids can brag about getting into UVA with a 1320, a bright and accomplished URM getting into 5 Ivies with a 96 percentile score is fine.

God bless America.

Well, someone has to be in the 10th percentile, so better a student from a hard working family dedicated to education and achievement than another boring legacy resting on their grandparents’ laurels. Right?

And as someone who had a bottom 25% standardized test score but went on to dominate at my law school … test scores function as a baseline cut-off and not necessarily the only indicia of ability. Obviously that cut off is higher if a particular type of cognitive skill is necessary (ie math for MIT) but that’s not the case for this student.

It looks like her mom is Nigerian. I had understood that Nigerian immigrants to the U.S. are well educated and their affluence is growing.

Anyway sounds like a household that really values educational achievement. Good for this young woman!

Bunch of racists on a sad thread. Congratulations to this kid.

According to you, my Black immigrant DD with higher SAT scores, top 10% of her class, at DMV high school should have swept ivies too, because yes, race! But shockingly she didn’t! Shockingly still few Black kids on Ivy campuses!
