Girl with 1370 SAT gets in to 5 Ivies

Good for her!

If her parents were educated outside the United States, she’s considered “First Gen”.

“First Gen” is the best hook you can have right now.

I remember a small-firm partner I worked for as a legal assistant telling me years ago that “people like me” (not Ivy League) don’t get into top law schools. I got into a top law school and have done much better than he ever did. He also had an acrimonious divorce and became estranged from his kids.

This accomplished young student should just tune out the noise and keep doing her thing. Congrats to her!

And she was a first gen, URM from a high FARMS school. This is the golden ticket trifecta for an Ivy admit.

For some reason, it’s really hard for black kids to score over 1400 on the SAT. Less than 0.5% do. Also, only 707 black kids scored a 5 on AP Calc BC back in 2020.

She is not first gen.

Why = URM

Why? Seriously, what from the article is showing you why she was selected?

You think that both of these facts or true:

* 1370 and 1500 the same score up to random variation.
* But most people who try wouldn't observe that result

....OK?

Yes. Because most people posting on here had to hold their kids’ hands to even get to the 1300s. Those kids will need tutoring to increase their scores substantially. Smart (unprepped) kids might get a 1370 their first time, but now that they have seen the format of the test they’re likely to substantially increase their score merely by taking it a second time.

The fact that this isn’t obvious to you indicates you belong in that first group.

She took only one time and never prepped?
Is that a fact?

Why anyone would not prep??
I'm sure she prepped for her tests, exams. finals etc. for her gpa

People have werd imaginations.

To 5/7 ivies and waitlisted at 2. She is #6 in the class. SAT is not great. ECs are fine but not amazing. If this same kid's parents posted the info about this same kid but race was missing...what would people have said.

Good for her! She seems amazing and not surprising so many top colleges admitted her. She really shows a lot of passion and initiative and leadership in her activities on top of her high GPA.

And a 1370 still puts her in the 93rd percentile. People need to realize that SAT or ACT is probably the least important aspect of the application (unless it's a very competitive engineering/CS major and they want to see above 750 on math). A 1350 is a great score for a humanities major as that is in the 90th percentile of scores nationally.

I guess those people should aim for the 2 that did not admit her. It sounds that those 2 would better align with their values.

Dude I don’t know. Je ne sais quoi? But 5 out of 7 ivies apparently liked her enough to accept her.

Didn’t this kind of question already get asked and answered when Elle Woods was applying to Harvard law? I know, I know, she had a high LSAT. But her degree was in {scoff} fashion merchandising.

What was her advocacy work that was not up your standards?

That is not the definition of First Gen. They ask where parents went to college. If they went to college - at all - anywhere - that is not considered "FG". They will also look at careers.

I didn't read the article. What are the parents careers?
