Look, a lot of people can gear down and just spend less money. If there are two parents in a household, that might mean one becoming a SAHP (of any gender).

Spending less money and buying fewer things is going to be just the shot in the arm this faltering economy needs. We had it far too easy for too long.

Please explain the math of how a 2 parent working family saves money if one is not working? Hmm.. that must be the MAGA math where the tariffs make sense.

It’s not math, it’s priorities for MAGA. Women should be at home doing domestic labor, while men go to work.*

[*Screwing in little screws in a non-union, low-wage job, 10 hours per day, six days per week, with no benefits. Trump’s Golden Age is MAGA going back to the gilded age.]

While scientists, economists, statisticians and so on get fired from government, sure they can go stamp widgets on an assembly line. No big deal that all their education, skills and knowledge should go to waste.

They’re all being recruited by Europe and Canada, so they’ll emigrate. We’re effed. A generation of brain drain, right down Trump’s gold toilet.

Do you ... know about doing your own childcare? About cooking at home, doing laundry at home, all that stuff the poors do?

dp.. most two parent working families cook at home, do their own laundry, clean their own homes. Don't be daft.

If the cost of childcare is more than what one parent brings in, then it make sense for that parent to sah. But, if not, then it doesn't make any financial sense to give up that other income. College is expensive; everything now is expensive.

Plus, it usually ends up with the woman staying home, and as a woman, I would not want to be dependent on a man financially in the long term. I did sah for like 2 years total, but I knew I had to return to work to save for college, retirement, and because I didn't want to be financially dependent on anyone. I saw how that worked out for my sisters and mom. No, thank you.

It's almost like MAGA want us to be like how Cambodia and China were when they rounded up all the educated people made them into farmers working in re-education camps.

And to send them to the Glorious Factories. Scott Bessent and other administration MAGAs rub their hands together and talk about how Americans should work in those factories for generations. It's MAGA Maoism.

From someone whose husband works in a factory (medical supplies manufacturing), there aren't going to be new US factories. His company is barely hanging on since Covid, and that's with them manufacturing high-demand medical supply items.

Why? Because all source materials for manufacturing the medical supplies comes from China. The production line machinery that their factory uses to manufacture is made in China. Replacement parts? Made in China.

US-based manufacturers like the one DH works for can't compete with Chinese manufacturers. China does it cheaper and faster. Since they can do it cheaper, they can sell it cheaper. DH's company can't sell it as cheaply, so they've been posting losses for the last 8 years, but the losses have only been greater since Covid.

The only way we can possibly hope to manufacture items cheaper and faster is through automation. Not "factory jobs." That's yet another thing these boomer boardroom-wanna-be MAGAs don't seem to understand.

All these factories will be automated. Is it better to have them in America or China?

Again, no factories can be built. Ai or otherwise. It’s just not possible.

It’s basic economics — it’s not worth automating if labor is dirt cheap (Bangladesh) but if labor is expensive, automation is cheaper (giant checkout lines). There’s a point at which the two lines cross. American manufacturing is now heavily automated — large custom parts are still made in the U.S. but often with imported steel. And the little doohickys that make the machines run are almost all made in China — even little things like screws, industrial staples, etc. We don’t make those small parts anymore because it s so cheap to make them in China and ship them. But for want of a nail, the kingdom was lost.

I’m a dem who has been appalled for decades about how we let everything go to China. But this is the worse possible way to try to retrench on that. Alsl I’m old enough to remember all the Buy American logos in the 80s back when Billy Joel was singing Allentown and Springsteen was singling basically everything he sings. And no one cared. They sang along to Allentown and then insisted on cheaper and cheaper products imported from abroad. You can buy American made sweatshirts — but they cost 3x as much as the ones from the gap. Or American made leggings — but they cost 5x as much as the ones made at Target. No one cares enough about American manufacturing to spend more. I hate Trump and his doll comment was stupid (and probably lifted from something he heard) — but there is truth to it. If Americans would buy one sweatshirt and wear if for a decade, we could afford American made.

Yep, a business owner tried to sell made in USA along side made in China. 0 hits on more expensive Made in USA.

I'll just keep posting this until MAGA understands econ 101.

Do you know any poors? They aren’t doing laundry at home because washing machines are a luxury, and oftentimes the ability to live in a structure that alllows for their use is a luxury too. The poors are all in the laundry matt, check one out sometimes, poors and the downtrodden for days.

Right. NOT paying someone else to do it. They have to be there. Pro tip: they can't remote work from a laundrymat, either.

For the poors childcare is the TV or a tablet of some sort and older siblings watching younger or just younger fending for themselves.

This isn't the 1970s. If you leave a 3 year old and a 5 year old at home alone, you risk getting reported to CPS. Haven't you been paying attention? It costs more to have someone (anyone) watching your young children than many jobs pay.

Try reading this website. It comes up a lot.

As for cooking at home, the truly poor live in food desserts, they eat a lot of carbs and carry out, not much in the way of fresh produce and meats. Convenience canned and boxed foods dominate. Diabetes and high blood pressure abound.

It costs a lot of money to be poor.

But yes it costs even more to not be. So there’s that.

You clearly don’t know many poors. But something tells me you are about to become familiar in ways you won’t find comfortable at all.

Lady, I grew up with no car for the family, eating government cheese, and using an outhouse for a toilet. Catch up.

I don't disagree with you, you know. I DO think that is the vision Project 2025 has for the country now.

Destroy the middle class and turn us all into working-poor serfs. That's the plan.

Until USA taxes billionaires, it's better to have these capital projects in foreign countries poisoning the air and water as far away as possible.
