No way. I know too many at UNC and my kids are both at different ivies. It is night and day. |
Yeah but the people here will never miss a chance to try to assuage their own insecurities. |
| It is 3 percent OOS for non athletes, legacy or international. |

Duke alum:
UNC is a great school. Chapel Hill is a quintessential college town, and being in the Triangle is awesome. It definitely has a southern feel with the high percentage of NC students. Plenty of very smart in-state kids go there but there are some who are weaker, and the in-state crowd can be cliquey. It has some very good programs. The super right wing state legislature is trying to put its finger prints on it, which is not good. I think that overall the school is strong enough to withstand that. It is very hard to get in from out of state (not much different than getting into Duke) but some of the stats in this thread are way off. They hired a geriatric football coach who is dating his granddaughter and their basketball team is a joke. Go to hell, Carolina, go to hell! |
I am not that person and never saw that thread. |

Sure, if cost is the main consideration. |
They lost to State TWICE in 2024, including once here at Cap One. I was there. Was beautiful. 2025 was not UNC’s year but these things change year to year. In 2024 Jared McCain never knew what it was like to beat UNC because Dook lost twice. So that’s 2 losses to UNC and 2 to State in the same season. Shameful. Shall we discuss 2022? I agree the football hiring in Chapel Hill is ridiculous but that’s what NIL has done to college sports. It’s a circus. Also Dook sucks. |
| State is better |
| I went to UNC for graduate school and Chapel Hill is such a great college town! Definitely a very tough admit for OOS with single digit acceptance rates. But, if your kid has the stats, go for it and see what happens! Just be realistic about other options. |
| It's competitive from out of state, but no more so than Auburn and Clemson are these days. |
Haha, people wish! Everyone is getting ridiculous now. I know those schools have gotten popular, but nowhere near the level of student at UNC in-state or OOS. |
Not even close. Those are cow colleges. UNC is a flagship. |

A kid from my kids' HS was awarded a big scholarship at UNC. Took the scholarship and is now at an Ivy for med school.
The 4 undergrad years are what you make of it. My junior is interested, but even with her excellent grades, rigor, test scores etc, it's a reach from OOS. Students seem to be really happy over there! |
Yep. They and UNC (and I'd throw in Michigan and UVA) are all basically the same school in different locations. |
