Tell me about UNC

Absolutely not true, not sure why UNC is so misunderstood. It is a very tough admit for Research Triangle and Charlotte students. Many more than qualified will not get in.

Coach K's last game in Cameron, classic.

UMD in state and OOS acceptance rates are nearly identical.

Mine didn't get in but was accepted OOS to UVA (attending).

UNC is a great school (from what I hear), but I wondered about attending a school where you're likely more qualified than most of your in-state peers due to their policy of favoring in-state applicants.

Yes, that was my kid's concern. I'm not saying the NC applicant pool is bad...I'm saying that this concerned my kid whether it would be very obvious that most of the admitted students were admitted based on far lower stats. It was that concern that made the school unappealing.

Do you think the same thing about UT Austin? And you are saying exactly that the NC applicant pool is bad. what else could you be saying???

This topic was already hashed out in a thread, like last week. I am sure the same Chapel Hill basher/ NC snob will post about NC kids being dumb and that the 18% state mandated cap means that the freshman class is dumbed down by the in state kids, with ZERO data to back up that claim.

Nice try…know tons of kids accepted at UTK OOS that didn’t even bother with UNC because it was pointless.

It’s nearly auto acceptance to UTK in state.

Did you not have the same concerns regarding UVA? Your theory makes zero sense re UNC but not UVA.

JHU is absolutely a top private.

My OOS DMV kid was accepted last year (Chapel Hill). The slight turn off at admitted students day was the overwhelming majority of students were from NC. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with people from NC, but my child ultimately preferred a school with a little more geographic diversity.

My child was also nervous about having to work out housing for sophomore year, the fall of freshman year without knowing anyone--it kind of felt like the folks from NC must all already have friends attending which may have been misplaced anxiety, but it was definitely a concern in their mind. YMMV

In Maryland, yes.

Yes, it's very similar to trying to get into UVA from NOVA or Maryland from a MoCo W school. I know Charlotte parents who seriously consider moving to another part of the state to increase their kid's chances of getting into UNC.

NP: the difference is UVA also is required to take in state kids BUT those kids are very high stat kids.

I’m saying MY KID thought the other students may not be as high stats as the OOS kids and it would impact collaboration, education, etc. that’s different from saying those in state kids ARE inferior. I have no idea if they are and neither does my kid. It was the concern that maybe they are that turned my kid off and the offer of admission was declined.

This isn’t true and you know it. The correction comparison in the SEC would be UGA/UF/Texas

Some of you are truly insufferable. This would be my evidence for picking UNC over UVA. I actually think most regions of country view at as more prestigious too.
