DS very interested in UNC and curious to hear recent experiences. We are OOS.

Good luck getting admitted OOS

They get beat by Duke a lot

You don't need to know about UNC because the chance of getting in OOS is so incredibly small. Apply and see.

Chapel Hill or one of the others? All are good.

It’s a great school, I’m local. Chapel Hill is very pretty and it’s great to be in research triangle. Fun sports rivalries with Duke and NC State. I think it’s laidback and friendly. Some will criticize the oos kids are ahead, but not all bad being at the top of class especially if continuing on after. There are plenty of very bright NC students too so it’s overblown a bit, but yes they try to accept from all over the state as they should.

Chapel Hill only admits 15% from OOS by state law. Most of the kids from our large DMV public that get in are straight A, 5+ APs, ECs, etc. VERY competitive.

If your kid can get it, its a fantastic school and environment.

Seems like they are now taking the approach of a bunch of other schools where they admit you, but you need to spend first semester (maybe first year?) abroad.

Know one kid admitted this way where we thought it was unlikely based on general stats.

It’s fall semester and a small percentage of incoming class.

UNC out of state is very competitive. Consider it a reach no matter what.

Search. There are many, many threads on this. Why should we have to answer the same question 20 times?

My son is between UNC honors and a HYP. That’s how awesome UNC is!

1. It is in NC so if you have a DD you are a fool to apply.
2. Sure apply to a state school and pay OOS tutition better have a major in the sciences or worthless. NC State is the Engineering school not UNC
3. OOS acceptance is capped at 18% by the state of NC However it's more like 9% OOS normally.
4. NC can be a great state to live in Mountains and beach. If your kid wants to settle there then sure great otherwise getting a job in another state not easy. Medical School from there instate students are accepted only like 1% are from OOS.

My kid got in OOS last year. The fact that it is an avg school for in state kids and only really competitive for OOS kids was a turn off. Kid turned it down.

Sheesh. PP sounds nice. Bless your heart.
UNC has a top national reputation. Don’t listen to this deranged person.
