What is important to you in a hotel room?

How many of you use the in room coffee machine?

Too grossed put by the thought of someone cooking chicken in the coffee maker

How is someone getting chicken in a Keurig? Pod machines are all any hotel has these days.

Mirrors on the ceiling
Pink champagne on ice

Optional: Warm smell of colitas

Nevertheless, I travel internationally dozens of times a year, so I have to find a way to sleep in hotel rooms.

This is what I look for:

1. Must be 4 or 5 stars and have top reviews on booking.com, which I have found more reliable than reviews on TribAdvisory.

2. No carpeting! Hardwood floors only.

3. I will actively seek a room with new looking furniture and a sofa long enough for me to stretch out on (not a 2-person sofa). If I can find this, I will bring my own plastic sheet, top sheet, and blanket, and sleep on that.

4. If no couch, I'm not happy, but will spread out my own plastic sheet, cover sheet, and blanket on top of the made bed and try to sleep that way.

5. There are a few places where I feel really comfortable and can sleep well. For example, there is one hotel in Dubai where I've stayed for several trips of about a month each. It's four stars only, but it was the top rated hoel on booking.com, and the five star hotel I originally booked into when I first went to Dubai was disgusting. So I go back to this hotel whenever I have to be in Dubai. I have one hotel I use in London as well, and one in Vienna.

6. I have been known to go to a local mall and buy a thick yoga mat I can use to just sleep on the floor in a hotel room where the bed and sofa are gross.

Thank you, PP, for your honesty. This is a lot ... and I can completely understand. I am also one who has so much trouble thinking "what is there" in a hotel room.

Thanks, John Kenneth Galbraith. We never would have figured that out.

Lots of kids = lots of noise. I don't sleep well anywhere but my own bed so I place a premium on a quite hotel (and my kids are upper ES and know how to behave).

Agree- I’m over people walking down to hotel included breakfasts in their pajamas. They wait in line for slow pokes to make waffles- slowly pour their coffee and don’t move out of way while they pour their cream and pour milk over their cereal in a styrofoam bowl. I’d rather walk to a cafe for a croissant and coffee.

Alone:
Comfortable bed
Room Service
Robe
Slippers
Good toiletries
If international, I like rooms that also include U.S. outlets, but it's not a deal breaker.

With family:
A suite or adjoining rooms, ideally one of the rooms has two beds
Room Service
Kitchen
Netflix access

Either:
Executive lounge access

This is so interesting. For us:
Location
Cleanliness/safety
Free breakfast

We spend so little time in the hotel when traveling, it's literally a place to lie down and sleep, grab breakfast, and go.

Non slip shower. I hate the showers in baths that you have to perform gymnastics to enter and exit.

After that - location - love walkability if that's what type of vacation it is. Prefer old or interesting buildings - plus they tend to be more soundproff.

Final selling point? Radiant heat in the winter - very hard to find - or windows that open the rest of the year. Balcony is a huge plus.

Obviously there are some trips that are just about business or travel so not as picky then.

The duvet only option can be too hot for over 50 year old women. I learned from my sister in law to remove the cover in summer and just use that, and store the arctic level comforter elsewhere.

We go by the Yelp reviews, and do not stay in budget hotels.

1) Location and safety

2) Cleanliness and comfort of room, beds, hotel, and everything should be in working order

3) Amenities in the room and inside the hotel.
