DS wants to go south to an academically rigorous school but one that has good sports and a lot of school spirit.

Have you heard of North Carolina?

Not OP, but we have similar questions.

Apparently, UNC-CH is even harder to get into OOS than UVA. And it’s much less geographically diverse. I think only 20-25% of students are from outside NC.

That last part seems completely appropriate to me for a state school. It’s supported by state funds and is designed primarily to create opportunities for NC students. All good. Just now what our DC is looking for.

More like 18% OOS

But they don’t have a direct admit to the business school! 50% admit rate is a risk if you want business. Go with a direct admit school. Hopefully, UVA will change their admissions and make business a direct admit from high school like nursing.

Plus UVA went to applying at end of 1st year now (instead of second year). The requirements to apply are way less, more will apply and I won’t be surprised if the admit rate drops to 35%. First results from this change will be known this summer, so absolutely expect that rate to drop.

UVA is very fair when it comes to McIntyre my guess is it might drop a little the acceptance rate but also there has been a shift because a lot of top students have been doing Econ data science cs with some business courses and over the last few years recruitment by top quant firms has been even better than Wharton The quant clubs at uva are students who could have got McIntyre but choose the other route.

That is an interesting observation. I have heard the same at another T15 business school with direct admit that quant finance students have been getting insane pay offers vs the traditional ib/consulting students. And everyone is trying to do business + some quant major. And the clubs are very competitive more than the traditional business ones.

Our dc is currently at uva and applied McIntyre he is not worried about getting in, because his advisor suggested that data science minor coupled with Econ had similar outcomes to mcintire. Regarding the quantitative students choosing careers yes it’s hot, but very stressful process you have to intern, present well pitch battles, network. Most of those students as my ds says are very focused and determined so they really try hard to distinguish themselvs and very cliche. Yes they get paid more but it’s with a lot of stress.

We are in state fl. We had to choose between ufl, unc and uva and finally decided on ufl. More than cost it was the atmosphere and programs he liked.

Smart decision.

UCB/LA, Michigan, maybe UNC, UMD (for STEM).

I don't think UNC is worth it, neither is UMD. Cal, UCLA, Michigan, and UVA are the 4 publics worth OOS tuition, depending on major.
