My child is a legacy and she is not white. The classes from the 1990s have HS-aged kids now. And a huge number of us are not white and/or married people who are not white and so our kids are non-white legacies (or double, in my case). The idea that legacy status preserves white privilege is something that is being used to pull the rug out from under non-white legacies of this generation of applicants.

Anyway, yay for all of these new admits! Welcome!

Thank you! I was at Yale in the 90s, and I am part of a group that would not have been allowed admission in earlier decades. I find it deeply ironic that now, just as legacy admits are finally more diverse and not just white Christian men, there are calls to end the practice.

The only difference between a kid with top decile SAT (1390) and a kid with 1550-1600 is purely test taking skills OR a $3000 one on one test prep course only very few can afford.

Go ahead and make yourself feel better by assuming your snowflake is smarter and more deserving than the kid who “only” got a 1390

There are excellent free resources for prep that mine used so don’t agree with $3000 comment. However I do a knowledge there are 1390’s working to support their families that don’t have that time.

No. It’s not. Many of those 1390s did lots of prep. Also- you can’t discount natural intelligence. Kids without prep that score 35/36 ACT and 5s all APs and had very high CogAT in elementary.

It isn’t necessarily the high cost tutor - it’s the high cost psychiatric evaluation to get extended time (often over multiple days). Know a few kids with it who just got into Yale, this yr and last.

Would like to understand Yale’s undergrad focus and campus life ? Is it enough to choose it over another ivy that seems better in the academic areas of study?

I think that’s a personal question that each kid will need to answer for themselves. But one thing to remember is something like 60% of students change their major from what they originally planned on, so you want to go to a school that will be a great fit for the student overall, not just based major.
