She probably referred to WWII because she doesn't know that France funded the colonies for the American Revolution or that Cornwallace tried to surrender to Rochambeau who then forced him to surrender to Washington, among other ways France helped the US become the US. I am really surprised how many people don't know about the French involvement during the Revolutionary War, so I wouldn't be shocked if she is one of them.

WWII is more recent than the revolutionary war.
