OP, two words - Falls Church.
I live in Arlington, and yes, Bethesda is a more visually appealing, more uniform area than Arlington. In the case of Bethesda, you’re comparing an area in a county with a whole county as in the case of Arlington, so 60k v. 240k population. Arlington has been rated the best place to live in at least a couple of national surveys - I think Smart Assets and Niche. The number one neighborhood to live is in the county as well. Arlington is often, if not always in the top 5 or top 10 places to live in the country. As I’ve mentioned, Bethesda is a lovely area as well and the real estate is more uniform visually than the whole county of Arlington but pretty similar with North Arlington. That said, you can’t really compare a county to an area of a county. In your place, I would pick Falls Church. That’s where I would live if my spouse wasn’t so attached to arlington. In Falls Church, your family will have easy access to many Arlington county and Tyson’s amenities. The only reason not to pick McLean in my opinion is the lack of community. People there tend to be rigid and keep to themselves. It’s a place that attracts mostly status conscious people who feel superior to others. The area is green and attractive with many mansions with gates and far apart from each other. With 2M budget, you’d be in the lower end socially. Falls Church is really lovely, highly educated. It has the highest income per capita in the whole are. It’s small and a lot more intimate than the other two options. People here fight about small differences but the DMV is a great place to live and raise a family |
| FCC has homelessness people roaming the neighborhoods |
Many North Arlington residents have an inferiority complex when it comes to McLean, so they often describe McLean as if they are referring just to the wealthiest areas. Much of McLean is in fact similar to North Arlington and Falls Church, just with slightly larger lots, slightly more expensive homes, and higher rated schools. But they don’t like that, so they stereotype McLean as one big gated community full of mansions and people who don’t know their neighbors. That describes about 10% of McLean, but is otherwise totally off the mark. Personally, I’ve found people to be quite nice, and we love living here. |
| I’m Jewish and live in Arlington. There are several nice temples here and we have lots of Jewish friends. I’d move to FCC for the schools if I were doing it again. But I like small school districts. |

Wow, lots of answers here (and so quickly, thank you!). OP here.
Seems like a healthy debate. For us it it comes down to what looks better on paper (Virginia) vs. what feels more right (Maryland). Commute will be to downtown DC, but only 2 days per week so this is not a huge factor. Re neighborhoods, I would not want to live in a place where people are too self-absorbed to notice their neighbors. Does this move the needle? Re Jewish community, we're not really religious, but I do not want my kids to be the only Jews in their public school class. We thought Maryland would be better in this regard. What about the area with a Falls Church PO but McLean schools? |
This. Too many replies are painting McLean as a single uniform area. The McLean bordering Great Falls is different than the one bordering Arlington and Falls Church where there are plenty of neighborhoods with a community feel. |
They will deny it, but that describes Bethesda and McLean. You can tell by the snobbish responses from those two places. The one above implying Arlington have a superiority complex… like I said above, both Bethesda and McLean are visually nicer than both Arlington and Falls Church. Bethesda has a real housewife of Jersey feel to it as far as attitude, McLean attracts a lot ( though not the whole area ) rich foreigners who lives behind big gated mansions and keeps to themselves. Both people from those areas are quick to call Falls Church and Arlington ugly and inferior. You cannot say anything positive about those two places without them jumping in to attack. Oftentimes, they’re comparing the rich area/neighborhood in their county to the whole of Arlington and still coming up short as far as overall quality of life for families, young professionals, retirees and others. Like said, in my previous post, Bethesda and McLean are nice attractive places, however, based on your criteria, I would pick Falls Church as the overall best option for quality of life. You’ll have quick access to Arlington amenities and the Tyson’s area, even Oakton and Vienna, and again, very nice places to live. https://smartasset.com/data-studies/where-americans-are-happiest-2024 - happiest place to live https://www.coworkingcafe.com/blog/best-cities-for-working-parents/ - best place to raise a family for working parents https://www.arlnow.com/2016/06/15/arlington-ranked-best-city-to-live-in-america/ best place to live rankings since to 20 years in a row https://www.arlnow.com/2023/04/07/three-arlington-neighborhoods-rank-high-in-best-places-to-live-in-america-list/ - best neighborhoods https://shooshancompany.com/arlington-ranked-no-6-best-work-life-balance/ - work-life balance https://smartasset.com/data-studies/healthiest-cities-2025 - healthiest Americans https://www.businessinsider.com/highest-social-security-retirement-income-401k-pensions-virginia-massachusetts-texas-2024-5 Retirees with the highest income https://www.wjbf.com/news/what-does-it-take-to-be-middle-class-in-2025-new-study-explains/ - highest middle class income |
You're kind of nuts and, yes, with all the silly stereotypes you are definitely giving off an "inferiority complex" vibe. You really seem to want to push Arlington although OP didn't ask about it, and then your fallback is to recommend Falls Church more because it isn't Bethesda or McLean than because of what you actually know about FC. Plenty of folks in both Bethesda and McLean know their neighbors well. |
A lot of stupid replies here describing stereotypes. All these areas are inside beltway and have density and various types of housing. This includes Mclean and Bethesda which both have multifamily housing and townhouse communities, not only mcMansions and gated estates. There are also walkable areas in all of these places. Both Bethesda and Mclean have downtowns with all the essential amenities you can walk to if you live near. Bethesda has better transit and biking trails leading to DC. Mclean has anemic public transit but is most centrally located if you consider the entire DC metro and being in the middle of all major office hubs. I would just plug in your housing budget into the zillow map and see what it gets you in terms of the house and where and what's around there. People have different expectations on what type of property they want to get for their money and what's most important to them.

You’re right, I love Arlington and as links above demonstrates it is considered a great place to live with a fabulous lifestyle. As I’ve said, McLean and Bethesda are pretty places to live, however, people there are extremely snobbish and isolating. There’s an over focus on house prices more so than other areas in the DMV even upper NW. You guys are obsessed with status and very much not community oriented like, Arlington and Falls Church. With a 2M, OP would be considered, “the poors” by many in Bethesda and McLean. The inferior complex is not with Arlington from my perspective. Comparing your neighborhoods or a small area of your county to a whole county with a population 5 times+ larger is ridiculous. As exemplified in the many links above, Arlington is often ranks in the top of places to live for quality of life. To recap, I would pick Bethesda and McLean and if status and flaunting are OP’s main concern, Falls Church for community, family and overall quality of life and 2M she will not be considered, “the poors.” |
Old Town Del Ray Vienna Falls Church Arlington Mosaic vs Rockville Takoma Park Kensington Garrett Park Pike and Rose Potomac What else? There is nothing in Maryland as charming as Del Ray and Old Town and no suburb in Maryland has as much to do and is as walkable as Arlington. Sorry, but it’s true. |
Del Ray and the Rossyln-Ballston corridor are much more walkable than Bethesda and have better bike infrastructure too. |
As PP said, you are complete nuts and only serving to make Arlington sound like a place full of insecure people best avoided. I can’t quite decide if you are off your meds or took too many today. |
Falls Church PO with McLean schools is great. I live in Arlington and there is not a huge jewish population IMO. Only a few kids in my kids' classes and I know of at least on Pakistani child who has been very racist toward my Jewish friend's son. I would pick Falls Church Fairfax county for lower taxes and not the tiny schools of FCC. |
I prefer VA vastly to MD, which I consider to be largely a dump outside of a few select areas, but you are forgetting Annapolis and Frederick in terms of charming as compared to Del Ray and Old Town. They are just as lovely, especially Annapolis. They are further away though. Also you missed a few places in NOVA - Belle Haven, Fort Hunt, Mason Neck, parts of Burke, and Mount Vernon by the water are lovely. There are also a few other lovely areas in the city of Alexandria such as Rosemont. Then you have lovely places in Arlington. Anyways, to answer OP's question: go with Virginia. It dominates Maryland in just about everything, but Maryland boosters will repeatedly screech about how Bethesda is so amazing. |
