There is nothing in Maryland as charming as Del Ray and Old Town and no suburb in Maryland has as much to do and is as walkable as Arlington. Sorry, but it’s true. [/quote]

I prefer VA vastly to MD, which I consider to be largely a dump outside of a few select areas, but you are forgetting Annapolis and Frederick in terms of charming as compared to Del Ray and Old Town. They are just as lovely, especially Annapolis. They are further away though.

Also you missed a few places in NOVA - Belle Haven, Fort Hunt, Mason Neck, parts of Burke, and Mount Vernon by the water are lovely. There are also a few other lovely areas in the city of Alexandria such as Rosemont. Then you have lovely places in Arlington.

Anyways, to answer OP's question: go with Virginia. It dominates Maryland in just about everything, but Maryland boosters will repeatedly screech about how Bethesda is so amazing.
