It’s only icy where residents don’t clear their sidewalks properly which is so many able bodied people it’s embarrassing and it’s already been like that for a while now.

yes but that's a lot of sidewalks, including most of the way to my kid's busstop

Unfortunately, that's something the county needs to take care of. You can't keep canceling schools b/c of homeowners. The country has a report tool. Every neighborhood has NextDoor. Have your people go out and shovel as a team. If you have scouts or older teens, sign off on it as volunteer work. People don't have to throw up their hands and say there is nothing that can be done.

Well, I did report, thank you very much. Nothing happened, so I reported again. The county finally came out after about a week, but they didn't do anything. I actually went over to shovel myself (even though I should not have to) but by the time I realized the homeowners were not going to, the snow was so compacted into a sheet of ice that I could not make a dent in it.

So what else do you think I should do PP?

The county should do this so the kids can walk safely to schools and bus stops
As a north easterner, someone would probably put some sand or cat litter on really icy spots. You don't bother trying to shovel ice and it's too cold right now for salt to work.

There is a really icy stretch along Langston Blvd across the street from DHMS that doesn't appear to belong to anyone obvious. It would be really great if the county treated it because it's used by gobs of students.

The County should definitely treat that spot, but TBH, if my kid went to DHMS, I would take the 30-45 minutes to take care of it myself.

How would you do that? Everything that wasn't shoveled is now a block of ice.

This is always why. They don’t care if parents complain. Always some on each side. It’s staff issues.

I appreciate Duran is trying to unshackle us from FCPS decision making and at least has made a couple separate calls this winter. It’s what’s right for the students but he’s got to deal with all sides of issues.

It's not a small stretch, but about a block long. More than you can expect any individual person to take on.

My kid went to Swanson and there was an active social media page. I guarantee that parents could figure it out if they banded together.

It's along Langston, so a very busy stretch that doesn't have easy access. It's a place where the county would close a lane of the main road to deliver sand/salt. It's not a friendly place for volunteers to work.

Our elementary school has had PTA volunteers helping, but this should really be done safely by the county.

DHMS needs some squeaky wheels. Langston is handled by VDOT. I'd contact the SB, the county board, VDOT, Beyer's office (they always answer).

Okay, so it's going to be just as cold tomorrow morning (11 degrees this morning, 11 degrees tomorrow). So are they going to delay again? (It was maybe 13 degrees on Tuesday when there was no delay?)

I just have no idea what to expect. Friday should be a whole 16 degrees in the morning so maybe no delay there.

There's a ton of MAP testing scheduled for tomorrow, including for both elementary and middle schools. It would be really disruptive to have a delay on a major testing day.

Also the feels like temperature was 2* this morning at regular MS start time. The feels like is forecasted to be double digits at the same time tomorrow.

Ehh, why let a thing like learning get in the way? We *have* to keep up with Fairfax.

It's pretty ridiculous how day to day this is too and how late they announce it. These are knowable conditions. Make the call.

For the duration of winter, the students will go to school Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays with a 2-hour delay and then the following days off for a teacher work day or a holiday - every other Tuesday and every fourth Friday. Otherwise, school will proceed as scheduled.

Also, attendance is a real problem so be sure you're sending your kids to school!

MCPS posted a good news we've solved all our problems school is back to normal tomorrow. After saying previously they were on a 2-hour delay through tomorrow morning.

None of these school districts say it's bus issues by the way. They say it's road conditions and ice. Lots of evidence at this point pointing to really maybe the buses are okay.

APS is back yo normal tomorrow, right?

So staff, who are getting paid to go to work, can't show up, and kids in the neighboring county can't go to school, and their parents have to scramble to figure out their plans. Why don't DC schools have this problem?
