There are fights at every MCPS high school, PP. My oldest graduated from Walter Johnson and the kids threw chairs and there was a knife fight a few years ago.

I'm a Gen-X UMC white lady. I got punched in the jaw by another white girl in outdoor gym class at Robert Frost Middle School in the 1980s (Wooton feeder). I didn't know her. She and her friend started picking on me and wouldn't leave me alone. Eventually I called one of them a name and she punched me very hard in the face. I was glad my family moved away 2 months later. That's the worst bullying I experienced across 3 "good" school districts. I also remember that the poorer kids seemed nicer than the richest ones.

This isn't about poor or rich, this is about the fact that the houses zoned for BCC are premium $$$, and yet somehow these behaviors are becoming a normal occurrence at BCC and Walter Johnson. If this is happening at schools where the entry price is $1.4M, then I might as well save $500k and move east of 270.

Any correlation between housing price and kid's behavior? Each cluster is required to have "lower" range housing.

Of course not, my point is actually the opposite. People pay premiums because the schools are "better" and "safer," when in reality they're not that different and it just makes me think "why the hell am I paying an extra $500k on a house when I could move to Silver Spring/Takoma Park and get a larger house and more diverse schools?"

Schools should be safe regardless of whether you paid $400k or $2M to live in your house. But if the school with an entry price of $1.4M is going to have all the same issues that any other public school will, might as well save money.

Don't even need to buy. Rent. Invest your $ for mortgage on something else somewhere else.

Principals in this district are foua for misreporting and coverups. They do it when violence happens and they do it to counter act teachers reports of violence and misbehavior and they do it on teacher appraisals when they want to fire them ( many times for reporting violence) ( teachers like to do their jobs well and correctly). I think They do it to get some sort of promotion because one the fraud or misdeed get traction with the media and out rage from the public the admin gets a cushy new job and the teacher gets fired. It's happened so much and it's wrong and show mcps, the board, and our own union could not care less about it

PP who got punched in the face at Robert Frost. You've reached the same conclusion I did. I enjoyed working in MoCo but left the DMV to raise kids. I no longer earnestly believe in "good" school districts like my parents did.

Great. So you moved somewhere to raise kids that also doesn’t have the “good” school district.

This is what I received from the school. My kid was at school today but was not aware a fight occurred:

How can I confirm if anyone has a beef with my kid?

Anonymous wrote:I'm on my second tour as a BCC parent. I have no intel on the fight because my current student was out sick today.

To answer your other question, my kids have been totally safe although like all schools the bathroom situation is ridiculous. And this weird tradition of fights around sports matches, which hasn't impacted my kids who never went to the games anyway. But my current student hears a lot more disturbing stuff, like a classmate who left after he was attacked by a gang. I'm not sure this is unique to BCC; I've heard similar stories though from friends with kids in other schools, including the wealthier publics in VA.

Btw the response seems good so far. The principal sent out a note, which was detailed and clear but no doubt he will get attacked by parents for something. There's at least one listserv parent being an idiot (lawyer mommy complaining that no one should get punished for filming the assault because George Floyd. GMAFB.)

MCPS punishing kids to try to cover up news of violence is unconscionable

I’m a mom of a senior at BCC who held back judgment on Dr Mooney long enough.
He minimized Chairmageddon 1 and 2. He also got thrown to the ground in a fight last year and said it was no big deal.
I reserved commentary on him personally for a while but this last letter had me fuming.

Why is the issue that a kid filmed it? I’m in agreement that they should condemn posting it online but we all know documentation is important. MCPS sweeps this stuff under the rug. If it were my child, I’d like to see the footage.

I’m just annoyed that the outrage from the school is the filming not the violence. I can guarantee without footage the perpetrators would get a less severe penalty.

Great. So you moved somewhere to raise kids that also doesn’t have the “good” school district.

Doesn't sound like I made a mistake moving out of the Walter Johnson zone.

+1. Former BCC parent here. A few years ago, my DC showed me a quietly circulating video of a teacher using the n-word in class. I’m not sure I would have believed it, if my kid hadn’t shown me. The teacher retired quietly at the end of the year.

Video is important. I would never discourage my kid from taking one in a sketchy situation, and I would back him up if he got punished by the school. Note - I’m not supportive of posting video or sharing on social media, and I would make sure my kid knew not to do that.

Any arguments about privacy are inapt - school is a public place and teachers are public employees. No one is violating privacy by recording video of a security incident at school and sharing it with parents, victims or people in authority.

PP on the second BCC kid: this is true. Link to the thread at the time below. Fwiw, the previous chair thrower got a huge round of applause when his name was called at graduation (2022.)

https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/1016182.page

I read that thread, (as well as this one) and in regards to chairmageddon 1 I am very curious as to what actually happened. Especially since apparently chair thrower was cheered loudly at his graduation?!

As an aside about the current situation I can absolutely see why filming fights/attacks should sometimes be punished. The last thing anyone should want is social contagion where people start fighting just to film said fights and get likes on social media.

But, there’s a difference between a kid who just happens to pull out their phone. And one who specifically has their phone out and is ready to record a beating that is about to happen because they were informed in advance of said beating.

The later should absolutely be punished to the same extent as the actual kid who is attacking.

Anonymous wrote:Hey DCUM. I have a question for B-CC parents (or maybe students since I know teens occasionally go here, lol). I understand that today at B-CC there was a fight and it sounded REALLY violent. Some kid had a chair slammed against his head! DD goes to B-CC. Is this like a widespread issue? DD is a sophomore - if you can say do any of you know what grade these kids were in? Did they just randomly attack the kid out of nowhere? Basically what I'm asking is, is my kid safe? Thanks in advance! I hope the kid's okay 🙏❤️

BCC is a rough school. In the past year or two there have been kids passed out drunk in the bathrooms, carjackings, and fights at football games.
