I’m a mom of a senior at BCC who held back judgment on Dr Mooney long enough. He minimized Chairmageddon 1 and 2. He also got thrown to the ground in a fight last year and said it was no big deal. I reserved commentary on him personally for a while but this last letter had me fuming. Why is the issue that a kid filmed it? I’m in agreement that they should condemn posting it online but we all know documentation is important. MCPS sweeps this stuff under the rug. If it were my child, I’d like to see the footage. I’m just annoyed that the outrage from the school is the filming not the violence. I can guarantee without footage the perpetrators would get a less severe penalty.
+1. Former BCC parent here. A few years ago, my DC showed me a quietly circulating video of a teacher using the n-word in class. I’m not sure I would have believed it, if my kid hadn’t shown me. The teacher retired quietly at the end of the year. Video is important. I would never discourage my kid from taking one in a sketchy situation, and I would back him up if he got punished by the school. Note - I’m not supportive of posting video or sharing on social media, and I would make sure my kid knew not to do that. Any arguments about privacy are inapt - school is a public place and teachers are public employees. No one is violating privacy by recording video of a security incident at school and sharing it with parents, victims or people in authority.
