I have one kid who’s school is virtual tomorrow, one kid with a 2 hr delay tomorrow, and one kid who’s school is opening on time with a half day Wednesday schedule. Bummer. |
I mean I absolutely don't think they should have opened today but this is a wild take about opening the school two days after a storm that produced less than a foot of snow. |
Parents don’t care if their kids learn tomorrow. They want babysitting. Because that’s what school will be tomorrow. |
Parents want their kids to learn but also parents have to work too. For all the MoCo and PG teachers won't be able to leave their kids, lots of DCPS parents are working hourly jobs or can't afford days off. It's an incredibly tough balancing act. I promise there are more parents in DCPS than just the white upper middle class folks that populate DCUM. |
Parents have had to work these last two days. Teachers have not. |
You chose to have kids. Deal with them. |
Our charter announced a two hour delay. So relieved to have any school tomorrow! |
Wouldn't this also be true of teachers who have kids? |
Did these teachers' students somehow force their teachers to live in Maryland? No, they didn't. This was a risk teachers assumed when they chose to live in Moco, and they should bear the cost of that decision. Seems kinda shitty to shift that cost onto their students. |
It's most DCPS parents. It's such a weird feature of this board that people get this perception that DCPS is populated by a bunch of rich, privileged families. In reality, the rich and privileged families in DC mostly reject DPS in favor of privates or charters. But the truth undermines PP's bizarre narrative about how school is just childcare for wealthy people? So I guess we aren't supposed to say that here. |
I'm a DCPS parent who wishes they were doing a two-hour delay but the vitriol on this thread about it is way over the top.
The reason I would prefer a two-hour delay is because I am very fortunate to have a super flexible WFH job and therefore it would actually be easier for me to let my kid sleep in a bit and take our time getting to school instead of having to wake her up early after this surprise 4 day weekend and bundle her up at 8am and make the commute when it's still pretty cold. But I get that a lot of parents don't have that luxury and while it's won't be as pleasant to do the normal start time tomorrow, it's also not really a hardship. After all, it's what we were always expecting to do, it's just that we will do it with a bit of snow on the ground. It's fine. |
Great call DCPS. Probably could have even done just a delay today, but were conservative which made sense IMO. There is absolutely no reason to be closed or delayed tomorrow. |
They are using their leave. They aren’t shifting any cost onto their students. I’m sure many parents of various careers used leave today because schools were closed. Was that kinda shitty of them to do? |
NP not shitty to use leave. It is their option to do so. But yea, schools should be open even if some staff uses leave. |
Wondering if the mayor spoke to WMATA at all. The buses are scheduled to be on a moderate snow plan tomorrow, meaning many of the buses students take won’t be running or will only be running partial routes. A delay could help deal with that. |
