Middlebury vs Tufts?

The kids I know there are smart kids with lots of non academic interests, studying different things: biology, math, IR, physics. I doubt they considered Midd — I think Tufts’ size and location were major draws.

Medford? It’s not interesting at all and difficult to get into Boston. The campus also sucks, and the student energy is very low.

Difficult? There's a subway stop *on campus.*

I agree with you about Medford (dull suburb), but my kid and I both liked the campus.

Also, Middlebury boasts about being a 3-hour drive from Boston (it's really more like 3.5 or 4 hours), so if we're talking about the location of these two specific schools, Tufts wins hands down. Unless, that is, your kid specifically prefers rural schools.

The subway stop is new but a game changer, for better and worse.

Middlebury College has a housing shortages and some financial woe

Middlebury College is ranked at #19 among LACs by US News.

You are correct that Latin honors have gotten out of control in recent years. Middlebury's faculty will soon vote to restrict cum laude honors to the top 30% of graduating students, magna cum laude to the top 15% and summa cum laude to the top 2%.

Middlebury's housing shortage due to Covid is no longer an issue. Furthermore, a new 298-bed first-year dorm will open this summer.

Middlebury just received a AA bond rating by S&P (Tufts is AA-).

Tufts is #37 in the US News National Universities ranking and hasn't been ranked lower than 27 in the past 20 years. Middlebury has been ranked in the top ten LACs for 17 of the last 20 years, and top 5 for 11 of the past 20 years.

You can do better than that. The 90% thing was whacked earlier in the thread. Their honors numbers are in line with their peers.
Middlebury has a $1.6B endowment, about the same as Northeastern. It is one of the 50 largest endowments in the country but they need to grow it to keep up with Williams and Amherst.
There are no housing shortages, that was a two year COVID thing and they solved it by buying a local hotel.

Just stop with the nonsense.

They reduced the number of classes needed to graduate from 36 to 34. Hardly "severe." And they did this to give students more flexibility for internships during J-term. And many schools are dealing with an increase in cheating--particularly those with an honor code--mostly due to the use of AI and stresses and autonomy brought about during Covid.

They have increased enrollment “unofficially” — and permanently — by well over 10% the past few years to deal with huge financial losses in study abroad programs and Monterey — all at the expense of the undergrad campus. Their increase in % of class admitted ED (where higher proportion of kids are full pay) has to be seen in this light.

Quit lying; they actually announced that they were moving back to about 2500 now that the covid bulge is over. They are also selling the Inn on the green since it won’t be needed for the overflow.

The only nonsense that I have read in response to my post is your response. You need to learn how to exchange thoughts in a more mature manner.

Why the hate towards Midd?

Assume you all have kids there?

If so, did you do the optional letter to the AO?

I think Colby also has a good art museum

Someone (probably you) has been consistently posting false or misleading content regarding Midd. You obviously have issues not grounded in reality.

Not everyone wants to go to some trashy research uni in providence. Some students want actual faculty attention and to exit the rat race

Not me. I just read the article posted in this thread by another. And I am aware of Middlebury's recent issues regarding housing.

I think that you are too sensitive as I have read nothing which appears to be blatantly incorrect.
