Does your DC prefer an urban/suburban environment (Tufts is 30 mins from downtown Boston on T line) or a more rural environment with cool features like it's own ski hill on campus (Middlebury)?

Otherwise, I slightly prefer the Breadloaf school (English) at Middlebury for the kid you describe.

The snow bowl is not on campus. It’s about 25 minutes away.
Bread Loaf is for masters programs.

I would pick tufts for Boston experience.

They reduced the number of classes needed to graduate from 36 to 34. Hardly "severe." And they did this to give students more flexibility for internships during J-term. And many schools are dealing with an increase in cheating--particularly those with an honor code--mostly due to the use of AI and stresses and autonomy brought about during Covid.

I think Middlebury offers the better undergraduate experience, especially for an English major.

Is your kid a recruited athlete? If not I would stay away from Midd. Athletes are too cliquey and too big a percentage of overall population. Especially for boys.

28% of students at Middlebury participate in intercollegiate athletics. That’s a smaller percentage than most peers. Stop with the misinformation.

They have increased enrollment “unofficially” — and permanently — by well over 10% the past few years to deal with huge financial losses in study abroad programs and Monterey — all at the expense of the undergrad campus. Their increase in % of class admitted ED (where higher proportion of kids are full pay) has to be seen in this light.

At Tufts chances are your kid will have friends at other Boston schools. That opens up so many social opportunities.

Sure, at Tufts you get a choice between a statue dedicated to a fried elephant and a plaque dedicated to someone who died in a hot dog eating contest (which is legitimately tragic). The campus felt like it was full of dismal boring hacks, not a smile in the entire place.

Nothing they said was wrong.
It is kinda shocking how almost every student gets honors: https://www.middleburycampus.com/article/2024/11/faculty-vote-to-reduce-credits-needed-to-graduate-will-debate-restricting-latin-honors . That cannot be a rigorous environment.

+1, the inflation is insane and it’s been known for years that Middlebury has this issue https://www.wsj.com/articles/you-graduated-cum-laude-so-did-everyone-else-1530523801

…both numbers quite a bit lower than 90%.
