Feedback on these two McLean houses

Remember the McMansion Hell blog? I feel like we need a McModern Hell blog now.

I like neither.

I would prioritize location and both of these are not ideal. I think you can find a better house in a better location (even same neighborhoods, just not backing to Gtown Pike or on a pipestem) at this price point.

#2 I hate the house, it’s on a main road and I don’t like GT Pike.

Mother Nature does not respect flood zones. Plus, that flood zone was probably determined before they disturbed all of the soil to dig out a lower level and put a house and pavement. Ponding indicates poor drainage. They should install a pole and hang a huge red flag out front. Buyer beware.

+1. But who’s says the builder hasn’t already mitigated with a French drain etc.

Look at the edges of the pond, there isn't a bank. It's a place that water collects at the bottom of a slope and can no longer drain because the ground is saturated. Where is a french drain going to drain? But you bring up a great point. Before plunking down 4 million, you should ask about the origin and stormwater management plan for any bodies of water near your home. That water does not look like a maintained water feature, it looks like an overgrown mud puddle.

First one is not my taste. Second one is hideous.

I like the part of McLean south of 123 better. Budgets are lower so the houses are less likely to be over-the-top ostentatious. These two houses are hideous.

Curious about how this could be relevant?

However, the shared driveway and placement behind other houses is likely to turn buyers away.

Are you kidding? The Weller Ave house it 1000 x nicer than those other two monstrosities!

I think they both are a pass. What about this one and do a few cosmetic updates:

How is the Cherry Hill House better than the other Weller one aside from the points previously mentioned?

These houses are both disgusting. 😂 what’s the point of having these homes this big and so asymmetrical. Especially number 2, what IS that?! How can you even see? I’d be blinded every night.

Cmon OP, do better than this.

That one has good bones, but updating could be expensive depending on how far you want to take it

It's likely to exceed OP's family budget if they prefer modern style given her choices she posted here. It's very $$$$ to modernize an older mcMansion like this, many consider dated. Although it's perfectly livable obviously and would better serve someone who can appreciate its classic style and will know how to furnish it, and not require too much work. Floor color and some custom paint and it might be all some people need. I like the lot better, it's bigger and more private. You don't have others stare at you at your own pool. Hard to find this in denser inner suburbs.

Neither house is attractive to me.

Avoid living next to a freshwater pond as it will be a breeding ground for insects and a danger to young children.
