Backing into your own driveway on a quiet street...why?

Anonymous
Either way you have to back up in one direction. For me the goal is to do the backing up in the direction where visibility is better. Usually this direction is into the driveway or parking space.
Even on a quiet street, visibility just isn't as good.

Those of you complaining about delays in a parking lot, you have to wait when they back out too?

+1 America is a country of horrible drivers and they’re easy to spot abroad. Total agreement that Americans are the only people you ever see pulling into spaces. They are dangerous and inept in cars.

Is your driveway typically as busy as a street? It’s obviously safer to back into your driveway (which is a relatively controlled environment) than a street that might have cars, kids on bikes, joggers, etc. zooming past.

When I back out into a busy street, I get a little thrill from forcing everyone to come to a screeching halt as I back up into everyone’s way. They all have to yield to ME. I get to be in charge. Now they have to wait on me for a change. I love this feeling. It’s empowering.

You must be a parent at my kids' school. It's the wild west in the parking lot. Everyone has a massive SUV and backs out whenever the h3ll they feel like it. The parents are worse than the HS drivers. It's every man for themselves.

This makes no sense at all

:
Backing into a space is more difficult that pulling into one. Ergo, it takes a higher degree of skill to do that vs simply aiming a car into a space going forward. It’s the opposite of ineptitude.

Do you really not understand this? Because it makes you sound dumb. Really dumb, I mean.

Really, it isn't. Just think about the geometry and then you will realize that backing in is far easier.

Backing into a space, which is narrow and not much wider than a car itself, is easier than backing out of a space, into a whole wide-open roadway or parking lot?

Really ?

Sounds like you’re a coward. And you’ll probably raise coward kids too. Not us. We back out assertively and show our dominance over little maga chumps like you.

You aren't thinking about the geometry. Where the car pivots when you turn in or back in and what the angles are.

Use that little brain of yours! You can do it!

Upper income white woman and I back up. Unload groceries or and packages. Plus it’s easier in the morning when I’m stiff and tired. It’s my GD driveway. As Tim Walz says, “ Mind your own damn business.”

I find it quite easy to back out of a parking spot, so I pull in.

You have to wait LONGER when people back out because they can't see clearly and creep out.

Exactly! So much safer to back in pull out.

But when I leave in the morning, people are out walking their dogs etc. So recognizing that I’m going to have to back up at one of these times, and that my view is more restricted when I’m backing up, I do the harder backup when fewer people are around.

There is so much backup hate on this board, it’s weird.

Because they don’t know how to do it.

I’m male and lower class and absolutely sure that the folks backing in are better drivers than most of DCUM. esp lower middle class who generally drive a lot more for commute and work.

I back into my garage all the time even though my street is quiet. The reason I do this is because I have a rear view camera. I can back in and get really close to the wall. If I drove in head first, I would be nervous about bumping the wall.

Why is taking the time to back in when you arrive at home worse than taking the time to bake out when you are leaving?

As for leaving the car at the end of the driveway…maybe it gives their kids space to play.

Backing in is safer. People aren’t usually walking around parking spots.

It’s a gift to my morning self. When I’m running late in the am, getting out of the driveway is one less thing I have to think about.
