Backing into your own driveway on a quiet street...why?

Yes, I know its "none of my business" but I'm so curious why they do this!! It is extremely easy to back out of the driveways on our street - no one is ever coming.

Anyone have a hypothetical guess why someone would do this?

some "groups" have learned to park like this no matter where vehicle is parked. Won't get into it here because it might be "racist" for moderator, but learned about it from a co-worker who explained it. Makes so much sense for anyone to do this tho.

Can you gently try and explain?

This person is being as ridiculous as the OP. Parking front in and backing out is neither better nor worse than backing in and driving out. Each version takes a little more time in one direction than the other.

Driver's ed in some communities teaches one, and in some communities teaches the other. As someone pointed out above, in many African countries this is just how people are taught to do it. Some white people assume that if they do something one way, and black people do it another way, that the black people way must be "low class" or lesser. It's pathetic.

I've never heard of it being a race thing, rather a military or law enforcement thing.

Why do people keep saying they are afraid to back over someone? Either way you have to drive backwards once. Also, don’t people have cameras now?

Is your driveway typically as busy as a street? It’s obviously safer to back into your driveway (which is a relatively controlled environment) than a street that might have cars, kids on bikes, joggers, etc. zooming past.

This makes no sense at all

Backing into a space is more difficult that pulling into one. Ergo, it takes a higher degree of skill to do that vs simply aiming a car into a space going forward. It’s the opposite of ineptitude.

Do you really not understand this? Because it makes you sound dumb. Really dumb, I mean.

When I back out into a busy street, I get a little thrill from forcing everyone to come to a screeching halt as I back up into everyone’s way. They all have to yield to ME. I get to be in charge. Now they have to wait on me for a change. I love this feeling. It’s empowering.

My husband started doing this in his 50s and his eyesight/hearing became less sharp. Even with backup cameras, it’s easier to back in the afternoon when the street is less busy and drive out in the morning when the dog walkers, commuters, and school goers are out and about.

Easier to get out and safer. Our neighbors park very close to our driveway and it makes it hard to park.

-Also, they enjoy creating delays and making dumb spectacles as they take their sweet time backing in and adjusting their vehicle.
-General douchery.

lol this is the most accurate description ever. Thank you PP, that was very satisfying.

Pulling in to a parking space is such an American thing. I live overseas and the only people I see pulling in are Americans. It’s kind of funny. Everyone else backs in. I do too now out of habit. With a backup camera I can do it just as smoothly as pulling in.

Those of you complaining about delays in a parking lot, you have to wait when they back out too?

It’s safer

Spouse and I both back into our driveway in the suburbs. House conservatively worth 1.2 million. Narrow street with several neighbors teens cars parked in the street. We pull all the way up (would never block the sidewalk).

We have a fence, and sometimes, people walking dogs or kids playing come darting out. It's much easier to see them driving out of the driveway facing forward, than backing out. When we back in, we are starting out on the outside of the fence and can see if anyone is in the way

Easier access to our EVSE. We plug in both cars and one car has the charging port on the left rear, so we back it in to charge.

Really, it isn't. Just think about the geometry and then you will realize that backing in is far easier.

You have to wait LONGER when people back out because they can't see clearly and creep out.
