New neighbor cut our tree branches

Funny you said this - we used to have a fence that we took down about ten years ago. Regretting that decision...

I had a fence and my neighbor cut back all the plants on our side of the fence when we were on vacation. The neighbors were self centered azzholes.

My thought is that they realized how lopsided the trees looked after cutting the branches on their side, so decided to make it all symmetrical by taking the liberty of cutting on our side too. These were full pine trees, and the lower branches provided the privacy screen. Now we have what look like a child's drawing - tall tree trunks with branches sticking out starting about ten feet up.

Lopsided trees fall over. It wasn't wrong to cut both sides of the tree, it would have been wrong to leave one side full.

Also, I see lots of tall pines that are bare at the bottom until 10-15' up. OP will adjust to the difference.

What a load of horse shite.

I regularly maintained a tree on our property. My neighbor did not. We had a fence between our yards and could not access each other’s property. The tree started dropping limbs on his unmaintained side and then the legal letters came threatening us for not maintaining the tree hanging over his yard. Which he claimed almost fell on one of his family members. We simply showed him the law to shut him up and he finally did what he needed to do all along. It wasn’t like I could send tree trimmers over to his property on another block when he wasn’t home. And after his rudeness I certainly wasn’t going to offer to pay a dime towards his yard maintenance.

If it is determined they had no right to cut branches on your property from trees that originate from your property, then you can think about next steps. I assume you could report and they would be fined, or you could go to neighbor and ask for remediation, like they plant fast growing trees/shrubs at their cost or something.

I would actually call the police and make a report. They were trespassing and damaged your property and knew what they were doing was wrong. I would also sue both parties.

THIS!!!

Op has no right to go on to her neighbor’s property to trim the trees. This is how things work.

Omg so many crazy people on this chain. Everyone rushing to sue their own neighbor??? Huh?

Op, speak to the neighbor, they have tried to be decent and discuss. You’re overreacting. Take care of your tree

I cut my neighbor’s tree branches that are four feet into my property. Every fall, the tree creates a mess on that part of my property where I have evergreen shrubs with flowers underneath.
My neighbor didn’t say a word.

Here's another idea. Read. They came into op's yard and cut branches on op's side.

If you care about your tree so much, then do maintenance and be respectful of property lines.

Imagine something had gone wrong and someone had gotten hurt. They trespassed on your property and ruined your tree. A lopsided tree is more susceptible to tipping over at some point. I’d also find out the price of a similar sized tree (there are actually companies that will bring in giant trees with huge root balls).

The mouth breathers that are blaming OP are entertaining.

We have a tree on the property line. The other house is a rental. We prune the tree since we want them to be healthy. We tell/ask them the pruners will need access to their yard on x day. . Can not imagine only pruning 1/2:a tree . Terrible for the tree.

Some people are weirdos about trees.

I'd be pissed they trespassed on my property. For example, who knows if the tree cutters were self insured? If not, they could try to sue if they got hurt on your property. It's not ok to enter someone else's property without permission. To clarify, were they actually in your yard cutting, or cutting them from his side of the property?

When they came around to cut the branches on our side, they were in our yard. We spoke with the crew and they were very apologetic - the foreman said he's been doing this for 25 years and knew that the owner's directions were wrong/illegal. We told him it wasn't his fault, just wish he had refused to do it.

So, the experienced, licensed, bonded, insured professional knew that it was illegal to trespass on your property and cut your tree for his personal profit, but did it anyway, and you told him that it wasn’t his fault?
