That’s been the case since the 1990s, when the Washington Post profiled the school. It was then just under 90% white. And at the time very sports oriented. |
False narrative. Huge population of Middle Eastern students who identify as Caucasian. |
I think thats to conform with the US Census definition. Asian is not accurate, and there are no other options. |
Not so much at Madison. More so at some other schools. |
That’s right; Like at Marshall, McLean, and Langley I believe. |
|
Just look at a yearbook. It’s not “all white” at jmhs. |
No one said it was. But it is the whitest high school in the county. |
I have noticed recently that Madison seems to be part of the pilot program for everything FCPS is trying out…SBG, cell phones, and now this Student Experience Survey I just got an email about. I’ve wondered how much of that was truly random dumb luck vs. Calvert volunteering to look good to Gatehouse. I liked Greg Hood; he was the principal at Thoreau when DC1 was there, then again at Madison. DC was the absolute opposite of sports oriented and never felt out of place in the environment Hood fostered. I was sorry to see him leave and am less than impressed with the current administration. |

We have lived in TOV since 2011. My kids have grown up here - I love that they can walk and bike all over town, and there are always neighbors out and about who know them. I know my kids won't be up to any nonsense at the Chipotle without my hearing about it from someone. LOL
Most of the kid at the elementary schools in town walk and bike to school. We love the farmers market, Halloween parade, Viva Vienna, Chillin on Church, the Madison Homecoming parade, the masses of kids who walk from Thoreau to Waters Field on Fridays to hang out together and the real sense of community. Yes, traffic on Maple is terrible, it's true. I never really got the "mean girl" vibe overall. Sure, there are some competitive moms and dads who constantly post on social media, but I'm sure you'd get that no matter where you live. I've made a wonderful group of friends here, and so have each of my kids. |
^ I think Vienna sounds much better than where we live in Mclean. Most of our neighbors are pretty indifferent. Few kids. We’ve had something pretty catastrophic happen to our family and maybe 2 stopped by to express condolences and sent us flowers. I would much rather have a closer knit community and maybe “gossip”’at least people care enough to talk |
+1 same with us! My kids are in 4th and 6th grade and we live in TOV. Kids are involved in all sorts of activities and DH and I have a number of different circles of friends. Have no idea what people are talking about with Vienna being cliquey. With over 15K residents in the TOV alone I think there are plenty of options for finding your people! (in other words, perhaps the posters above saying that it is like middle school may just be looking through their own middle school lense?) |
This sums up our experience of living in Vienna as well although we have only lived here since 2015. And the PP's comment about hearing if your kid is up to something is so true! It is funny actually as I will be running short on time and need to run into Giant for that one item hoping to make it as quick as possible and I will always see someone I know. Vienna is that kind of place. It really is a genuine community. |
| It's very cliquey. Jocks and mean girls raising the next generation of jocks and mean girls. |
We moved from Vienna to McLean. Personally I prefer McLean (not Mclean) because people are a bit more private and not in each other’s business as much as we experienced in Vienna. And there are plenty of kids in our area - McLean HS has about 250-300 more kids than Madison HS. I’m sorry you didn’t get enough support from neighbors when you had the catastrophic event in your family. Perhaps people didn’t want to intrude? I feel like we know all our neighbors who want to socialize with other neighbors - and we respect those who keep up themselves. Sometimes it’s hard to know when overtures are welcome. |
