People knew. I can tell if my alcoholic mother speaks one single word to me. The tone of her voice immediately gives it away. This thread asked for physical signs so people shared this. I hate an alcoholic who thinks they had everyone fooled. You didn’t.

Sorry for your trauma but this is BS. People definitely didn’t know the extent of my drinking and this thread shows why. The responses are cartoonish.

I bet your mother is drinking much more than you know. Alcoholics are experts at hidden drinking. By the time they lose control of hiding it, they are many drinks in.

No, alcoholics THINK they are experts at hiding their addiction. This thread asked for physical/facial signs, and is somewhat limited in its replies as a result.

But no, sweetie, you're not hiding anything. You reek, you sound drunk, your constant need to bail at the last minute or just no-call, no-show is a tell, your instarage at the slightest slight... your disease is literally oozing out of your pores, on your breath, and behind your eyes.

Alcoholics aren't fooling anyone but themselves.

Someone here is full of rage, and it isn’t me.

Besides, I’m sober. I will always be an alcoholic, but I don’t drink.

Are you dumb? I am aware she drinks a ton, she’s an alcoholic, like I said. I’m not confused about that. Typical alcoholic behavior, thinking you’re smarter than everyone - ooooh nobody knows I drink, I’m the one person in the world who can hide alcohol abuse; oooh let me tell you about your own experience with your mom's drinking. You guys are not half as clever as you think are in your own delusional minds.

I think they are for a while, or at least the high functioning ones are. But they continue to think no one knows long after everyone knows.

Ahh damn my pink irish skin! My face is always pink, and gets red super easily (embarrased, too warm, too cold, sensitive in general). Now I'm guessing people think I'm an alcoholic because I look "ruddy"

My face was red and puffy from a thyroid disorder, rosacea and sun damage. So it could be other things.

My SIL doesn't drink and she's always red. It's her sensitive skin. She also blushes very easily

Your experience with your mother does not mean that you can speak with knowledge about alcoholics in general. Many alcoholics are extremely high-functioning, successful people.

My alcoholism has never impacted my career negatively, and in my support groups I can point out many others who continued at the top of their game into and through getting sober. I am a top expert in my field, and remained so during and after the decade I abused alcohol.

I'm sorry your mother is an alcoholic, but that doesn't make you an expert on alcoholism in its many forms. And there are MANY. There's a huge range, as anyone who has spent time in the recovery world knows.

I know at least two alcoholic orthopedic surgeons. One is retired at age 55, has the big hard gut and yellow eyes from cirrhosis.

When I was in acting school I had to take a stage makeup class. Alcoholic characters, like Falstaff, always get a rouged nose.

Most old men have big hard gut.

Most alcoholic are selfish toxic jerks to be honest. That stands out more than the red face but like we’ve said, the thread asked for physical features, not the personality features.
