Do you know your IQ?

That’s the only way I know what mine is, 125. The lowest one was 90 and I felt bad that everyone then knew it.

I can believe it. When I was in school, we were weighed in gym class and the teacher would call out our weight in front of the whole class so a student could record it. My weight and height are even listed on my early elementary school report cards (early 80s).

Yes. Yes
Like everyone else answering, I tested into GT in the 80s. I qualified for MENSA, but didn't join. I was a frustrated student in all levels of school. I don't remember my IQ score.

There's some confirmation bias. Those of us who scored well don't mind answering the question. But also, let's not forget the demographics of the DC are and DCUM. We are more highly educated than the average, and the IQ test definitely shows privilege bias.

Is IQ something you were born with? Or is it increased with education?

OP here. I wonder if I was tested in school and don't remember. I went to parochial school and didn't have the GT programs a lot of posters are referencing.
I was a bright child and usually tested in the 95th or so percentile, but likely not mensa material. Part of the reason I ask about IQs is that I feel like I am getting dumber. I wish I had the data to back that up or prove my feeling wrong.

How high does it go? Whatever it is that’s mine

My cautionary tale is Marilyn vos Savant who, reportedly, had the highest IQ ever recorded at 228. She was born in 1946 and appears to have spent her life giving motivational talks, serving on corporate boards and answering riddles in her column in Parade Magazine. I've always found that kind of sad.

Well, DCUM skews more educated, so I don't above 120 in this thread is unusual - and no one sub-100 is going to be reply and give a number. For the records, I'm the PP with the concussion, my IQ is 129, but I flunked out of college because I couldn't pass physics. It's not the end all, be all of success.

No. Most of these posters also claim their kids have IQs over 130. 90% of them full of sh!t. And people don’t flunk out of college because of one class being too difficult for them.

I would post mine if I had a 100 IQ but I have no idea what my IQ is. Growing up outside of Boston they don’t test unless you have a learning disability. No gifted programs or at least very few. Massachusetts still manages to have the top public schools in the country.

Here’s an article of the states listed by highest IQ down to the lowest average based.
Like all these studies Massachusetts and other New England towns are on top with Mississippi being on the bottom. DMV states are in the middle somewhere.

I think I’m dumber now at 40 but happier and I think have sharper social skills.

I wouldn’t mind writing a column for parade magazine instead of reading legal documents and emails all day.

The LSAT is mostly testing for reading comprehension and logic and reasoning skills. It’s not an IQ test.

My older brother who spoke for me has an IQ of 118. I know because I found all his files in a box at my house. I had great fun making fun of all of the comments in his report cards. What a fun day!

How do they test a child who doesn’t speak?

As someone who got a high score and went to GT and is very average in life success... I don't think it matters. I struggle with life as much as or more than others because I'm highly sensitive and also analytical and have to research everything. I'm not very care free. I'm divorced. I like the beach and outdoors. I dislike math.

I don't get what's so great about IQ. My kids are all bright but haven't been tested except the one with ADHD/ASD. How is it useful to test and know this at all?

Maybe. But the scores people are posting are exaggerated. It doesn’t take a genius with a high IQ to see that. It’s embarrassing.

People with very high scores - and I know some of them - would have no qualms posting their scores on an anonymous board, especially since it’s the kind of thing no one brags about publicly. So I don’t think that the scores people are posting are exaggerated. You don’t have to believe them, but your “it’s embarrassing” comes across as a little…I dunno…defensive. I’ll just remind you that IQ is ultimately meaningless and has no bearing on success in life.

Same on all counts!

Anonymous wrote:Mine was 138. Low for my family: my sister was 148, our mom was 156, and my father's was close to 180. I have never met anyone smarter than my father. But if you think being a super genius makes you super competent, etc., guess again. My father was brilliant, but EQ stunted. It is hard to hold a regular conversation with someone who intellectualizes everything.

My brilliant father (200) is in his third marriage. He’s cut off his mother, his sister, and his daughter among others. Emotional T Rex

One of my sons to my surprise has an IQ of 104. All of his life, people marveled at his intelligence, vocabulary etc. He made excellent grades and is very successful in his career.

....because he told you?

I think a bunch of people make up a number that sounds good to them. No one can fact check them.

Because I've seen the report. And the degrees from Oxford kinda back it up...

I’ve often wondered that. My mother has minimal education due to her circumstances growing up, but she’s much more intelligent than any of her children. We’ve all had far more education than her.

There are many types of intelligence of course. I’m not sure how useful these scores are. I would guess they are far too simplistic.
