Ivy with school atmosphere closest to big school, like Big Ten

What an odd conclusion. You say your kid wants a Big 10 school due to XYZ, everyone tells you that Ivies don’t have XYZ, so you say you will now invent reasons 1,2,3 to figure out a reason to apply to an Ivy.

Is this a $$$ thing I wonder and you just won’t say that?

Northwestern is Big 10.

+2 Are people really that clueless about football?

Big 10 is not just a football conference.

What are you talking about? The Big Ten is a football conference. That’s literally what it is.

Northwestern is ranked higher and harder to get into than some of the Ivies, fyi. I also think the vibe at Northwrstetn is different than most big 10 so it really depends what she likes about the big 10. Northwestern is way more geeky.
I went to Michigan and DC now at NU and agree NU is more Big 10 light relative to Michigan and the others-though Michigan about to go through a football slump after the last 3 years of glory. Oh well-maybe the new basketball coach will have success and there is still a ton of school spirit no matter what!

In 1980, The Ivy League wanted to expand. It engaged in discussions with Northwestern--which is a founding member of the big ten Conference. Northwestern shut down the discussions due to travel distance for athletic teams.

Northwestern is building a new football stadium with a lower seating capacity than the old stadium.

Consider USC, Michigan, UCLA, U Washington at Seattle, U Oregon, Northwestern, and Wisconsin all of which are now Big Ten Conference member schools.

Notre Dame, Duke, and Vanderbilt are others to consider as well.

Do you think that Michigan football games will have terrrible attendance?

I doubt the actual record means all that much unless as PP says that like NU they become consistently uncompetitive and make their stadium smaller.

Understand you are kidding. Single tickets for Michigan football games go for hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the game (I'm on the parent facebook groups and am consistently shocked by this). Every game is sold out. The student tickets go through a lottery system and then the students sell to each other at jacked up prices. For a college football game.

Notre Dame will likely join the Big 10 as well in the next few years-their geography and culture matches well with the conference, and they will need to join a conference to keep themselves in playoff contention.

😂😂😂 NEVER in a GAZILLION years would the Big House ever become smaller. Maybe when hell freezes over…

None.

OP, my kid that is at an Ivy this year wanted nothing to do with a Big Ten atmosphere or big football/tailgate culture.

He was looking for a school without a big greek presence. Not a big party school. And mid-size. Ticks the box for Ivies and SLACs.

I went to a big in-state public with that culture and loved it. I would not have found it at my kid's school.

It's a bit over the top. Please consider priorities. My son is attending U of M. Freshman right now. After the Texas game, he heard a kid saying how disappointed he was (in a serious voice) because the main reason he came to Michigan was the football.

There's no question that sports success drives apps. But I think it shouldn't. Us college sports have become minor leagues for pro sports. That's insane.

Also, I waa aghast that last year's QB got injured already and can't do his first NFL season. I hope he finishes his degree while healing.

Anonymous wrote:Yale alum here but grew up in an OG Big 10 city. I was raised to believe that everything about ivies was better and would make my life better, too. I was so disappointed by my historic but dark and dirty dorm, the relatively small size of campus, and how low key sporting events were save for hockey games. The tradition of the Game is special but I was expecting Ohio State-Michigan and it seemed so tiny and sad in comparison. The friends I made from my alma mater are priceless but the competition for opportunity there was so intense that I wonder if I would have had even more post-grad opportunities elsewhere.

If your DD is looking for Big 10 atmosphere, steer her towards actual Big 10. There are smart kids and amazing programs at all kinds of colleges and I spent way too long hoping that the school of my dreams would be what I had actually imagined vs. what it really was.

Appreciate the observations. They reinforce that she shouldn't apply to an Ivy thinking she can replicate the Big 10 atmosphere.

No country club friends here. Math or physics and my husband has a Masters in CS from GT. It is on her list. Family members at UF now but she isn't interested in that one.
UWisconsin and Ohio State have good honors classes for math. Ohio has honors versions of even upper level physics courses.

Thanks!

Although value will be one of the considerations, we are fortunate that it doesn't have to be a deciding factor.
