Is it only socially acceptable to dress nice for work?

Where are you hanging out where everyone is? Majority of people I see during the day that aren’t in a corporate environment or court look pretty dumpy

I mean, you can always dress up for the theatre, going out for dinner or drinks, church.....

Oh, also you are not out of place if you want to dress up for an art museum or gallery thing.

Why are you so obsessed with baggy clothes, OP? Wear what you like and feel comfortable in. It's that easy.

Today I wore a maxi dress and full face of makeup to get my kids from the bus stop.

So give us more examples of what kind of clothes you mean?

I wore this shirt with a pair of pink chino shorts and flip flops.

That was overdressed? 🤔

Wait until you age up and are supposed to wear an old lady uniform. Hairdressers will only give you a spiky pixie or unflattering bob. Not wearing pants or hating toddler pastels or primary colored tops makes you weird.

Because in the car, that’s what DH said he thought it was.

Well, sure. Your husband isn't going to tell you they dislike you because of your personality.

I wonder if that's because he cares about her feelings or because he knows she won't listen.

I always look put together - and I live in West Virginia! There’s a mix here as there is everywhere OP. Please stop overthinking this.

Oh to have the energy to care so much about what other people wear…

Anonymous wrote:OP, you described wearing shorts and a blouse. You weren't dressed for the met gala. You are the only one who thinks that you were dressed "nicer" than the other women. And you used the word "dungarees" to describe what appears to be overalls.

Dress how you want and be kind to others. The end.

I think the overalls posted in the other thread would be a cute look for a kid bday party.

I dress very casual and have never thought poorly of someone who dressed better, better haircut and makeup etc. I think it's great they want to put in the effort. But it's all about that person's broader vibe - are the friendly, open, do they view me as their equal. I say that last part because it's so clear you do not view these women that way.

I live in DC and most people around are dressed ore casually but I don't really care. I feel better when I look more put together.

Are you the person who moved to a "flyover state" and was complaining that no one dresses up and you think you dressing nicely is keeping you from making friends? I said it in that thread and I'll say it here but I don't think that's the issue -- wear what you want. But don't disdain others who dress down. I have lots of friends who don't dress up as uch as I do and it's not an issue at all and it's not like they used to dress up or something -- I'm just their friend who is a bit more formal and dress.

OP is just another immigrant disrupting a culture and refusing to assimilate.

Xenophobe. Plenty of Mayflower American types who are put-together on the daily.

It may be less about the individual clothing items and more about the total look. If you also have a full face of makeup, styled hair, perfume, manicure/pedicure, and noticeable jewelry, you’re going to look too dressy despite your chino shorts.
