Similar age kids and similar plan. My kids don’t get bored in the summer, nor do they spend much time on screens. They do swim team, go to the pool with friends most days, we visit museums, go hiking, travel to see family for 1-2 weeks, etc. Plus now the older one has 3 weeks of band camp (& took an online class last year). There’s never enough time to do everything they/we want to do, especially with summer break getting shorter in our school district. |

three weeks of sleepaway-$5000.
two weeks of Calleva-I think it was $1100 And I still have to get some coverage for an additional two weeks |
My kids are going to two sleepaway horseback riding camps (one in our home state, one across the country) plus doing shows away and I don't think we're spending $75k on all of that... |
NP. The PP was correctly pointing out that screen time was never mentioned in that post. Both of your replies are nonsensical. |
| 2 kids. We'll travel for 3 weeks (not all in one chunk), and do camp for another 2. The rest of the time we have a babysitter who will take the kids to the pool and library. I can reduce my work hours for a few weeks, but not the entire summer and we absolutely need full coverage for the month of August. |
Remember to factor in the cost of lost wages for the SAHM not working |
DP here, I haven’t worked in so long that “cost” is negligible thank goodness! |
That’s…clearly already been worked out in the budget. My god. |
+1 I haven’t worked out of the home in 15 years. I’ve now been at home longer than I worked. We have our summers down to a science, even if they’re a little boring. Pool membership, playdates, day trips here and there, and a week of beach vacation. |
Self-employed, and same. As the kids get older they want more flexibility and fewer day camps. |
Yep. That was true for me when my oldest was 4. |
And honestly, even though our summers aren’t as adventurous, my kids love them. We all love the downtime and hanging at the pool. My kids have never been camp kids. I only did the day camps when they were really young and it was harder to have them home all day because they were so needy. Because I’m a SAHM, we also have to watch what we spend. I can’t just send mine to camps for $1,000s of dollars. I wish I could at times! But they really do like being at home better I think. |
Sounds like our summer although they have 3-4 weeks of day camp. Looking forward to it! |
Unless they are specializing in something then they do. Ballet intensives are necessary to keep up. Depending on location and school it’s about $6,000 with housing. My daughter is going to a basketball day program which is $650 a week x 5 weeks. |
| There is no one more annoying at the pool than teens who are too young to work or drive but too old to go to camp. They are the bane of my existence. Parents, if you are allowing your kids to do this, please go over common courtesy with them and how to behave in a shared space environment. |
