what is the lowest ranked school you personally know a kid was rejected to but was also accepted to a top 30?

Waitlisted at Wesleyan in at Stanford.

Opposite here. In at UF, WL at UGA.

Curious about majors for both posters. Guessing that made the difference?

UGA doesn’t consider major for admissions purposes

Ah, ok. Thanks!

Wesleyan is not low-ranking.

That’s because CS and engineering outcomes are less sensitive to rankings, thus many try to go to a public, in-state if possible. Basically, it’s somewhat about selectivity, but also about available seats. Public seats fill quickly with in-state value seekers.

This.

OP here: I didn’t ask for low ranking. I asked about rejections from lower ranked schools.

The PP definitely understood the assignment: Wesleyan is lower ranked than Stanford (as are most schools!).

I’m paying for it anyway - but thanks for the snark!

Accepted to Columbia (first choice), Yale, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Brown.

This is insane or fake. I'm inclined to think the former.

How is it "broken" if your kid is in at a UC?!?!?

The fact that it worked out for my kid is irrelevant when it’s clearly not working out for most applicants. In my kid’s case, what I consider the strongest part of his profile (a one-and-done 1600 SAT) wasn’t even considered by the UC system. Fixating on the applicant’s GPA during an unprecedented era of grade inflation is a flawed strategy, as UT Austin just made clear last week.

All that said, we’re thrilled. It out, but as much by luck as anything.

That kid should thank their lucky stars. Boston is a much better place to go to college. They will love it!
