I used to get straightening perms until this study came out: https://nihrecord.nih.gov/2023/01/06/study-finds-hair-straightening-chemicals-raised-uterine-cancer-risk#:~:text=The%20women%20were%20followed%20for,likely%20to%20develop%20uterine%20cancer.

You are most likely right that one perm isn't going to make a difference. But what if a teen likes the results and starts getting them regularly. I know the article is about women, but I can't imagine there isn't effects on the male body as well.

I do think there is something different in a "relaxer" that straightens that increases risk over a perm to curl. BUT I am also sure that a curly perm isn't cancer causing substance free either, just to a lesser extent.

Look at any group of teen boys. It’s not the 80s perms you are imagining. Here’s a quick search on Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/pin/for-baylor--165436986300671372/

Not, PP, but gosh -- I actually think that style is cute.

I (a woman) actually had that look in the 80s.

I mean are we are parents really supposed to love our kids hair and clothing choices?

It’s so ugly and not cheap. What happened to Rave home perms. It was all the rage in the 80s. I think it was $8 a box and it smelled horrific but last at least 6 months.

Tons of teenage girls get their hair colored, straightened on their parents' dime without anyone thinking about it.

That's not good parenting either.

Ditto. Mine has only this year accepted the curls and stopped trying to straighten it, but he still wears it fairly short.

My kid experimented with this hairstyle this past year too lol I told him a perm was a bad idea (he has thick, straight hair). He began using the sea salt spray and would use my curling iron in a few spots for some waves. It worked pretty well tbh.

He's now moved on to something else - he bleached his hair platinum over winter break. At first I was horrified, but now it actually looks kind of cute believe it or not! (he was sort of dirty blonde anyway).

To his dismay, he remarked that it resembled broccoli! He has thick, straight, black hair. Can anyone recommend a good place to get it done, and what's the typical cost for this service?

By thick, straight hair do you mean like Asian textured hair? Because every Asian friend I had growing up in the 80's who got perms regretted it- their hair could not handle it and they looked like poodles and it fell out within a coupe weeks.

What? Would you say the same thing to the mom of a 14 year old girl in 1985?
