Teacher is failing or all kids?

This is what happens when you spend years passing students who do very little actual work and allowing them to move up in grade levels when they do not know the material.

I'm a middle school teacher. One of my classes almost all students are passing and do well on tests. A different (same subject, same level) class over half have Ds or Fs. The first class the students pay attention, ask questions, and do their homework. The other, the students talk the entire time I'm teaching, goof off in class, and don't do their homework.

It's not hard to see the connection.

+1, math teacher here. It’s all the same material, except for the kids/parents.

How do you know the class average?

Was this course open enrollment? If so, was it recommended the student take it?

Has all homework and classwork been completed on their own? That means they really know the material and aren’t using ChatGpt or PhotoMath etc to just get it done.

Are they regularly coming for extra help and going over notes and class content? Are they waiting to study until the night before the test and hoping the questions are exactly like the study guide, which they never will be and are told that?

So as teacher what you think when majority of your class failed?
A more kids are on drugs'
B more kids did party
C more kids used ChatGpt or PhotoMath for homework
D You were not able to explain this chapter properly?

E. Most didn’t put the required effort in to learn the material. You have no idea what it’s like now, even in an honors class. They sit with both AirPods in and their eyes closed. They refuse to take out a pencil/pen or turn anything in during an entire unit. They show up the day of the test and admit they are not prepared. Then parents are upset they are not passing because they are an honors student. You are assuming they even come to class. Teaching has changed so much. Explaining the material well is not the issue every time.

And it starts in ES where they talk over teachers every day and interrupt learning every minute and complain that everything isn't a game-learning is "boring"

Fcps REALLY needs to eliminate 1:1 laptops in elementary school and return to grade level laptop carts that teachers split and only bring in for end of week rewards or special assignments.

That would make a significant improvement in educational quality, and most importantly, behavior.

It won't help the middle and high school kids, but will dramatically improve things in 2-3 years.

Wrong we need parents to parent again and stress respectful behavior in school. Your teacher does not have to juggle while she teaches and listening and not constantly talking is important to the learning process. But a lot of parents are rude and don't care and the kids pick it up and behave this way at school. Stop blaming everything on technology.

There is zero justification for using laptops in elementary school.

We know that developmentally, screen time is terrible for young minds.

FCPS absolutely needs to eliminate daily laptop use in elementary school.

The kids are coming out of lower elementary school addicted to screens. Having them in the classroom the way they are used now is terrrible for their minds and behavior.

Stop avoiding the topic of parents not parenting-they are addicts because they are on all the time at home!

Exactly, 30 minutes a few times a week doesn’t make an addict

These two issues are linked IMO. Teachers are all too happy to stick kids in front of devices because kids' poor behavior improves temporarily when they are fixated on a screen. Parents do the same thing.

My young adult child was out having dinner with friends this weekend and said that there were two families at the table next to them. Their kids were yelling, running around the restaurant and twerking (these were apparently elementary to middle-school aged kids). Patrons started complaining and the parents got mad--they were all drunk and ended up leaving the restaurant giving the finger to everyone around them.

I'm sure it's the teacher's fault if those little angels aren't doing well in school. /s

As a teacher of over 20 years, I’ve seen many cases where if the child is disrespectful, so are the parents. It is rare to see disrespectful children come from well-behaved parents.
