What do you think they will do in terms of shuffling? What schools will be the winners and which will be the losers in terms of SES (which is a proxy for test scores) etc?
I’m guessing part of the plan is to move lower SES kids from Seneca Valley and Gaithersburg to Crown plus alleviate some overcrowding in other schools. Move higher SES kids from NorthWest/ Clarksburg/QO to Seneca Valley. I think some of the schools on the periphery like Damascus are just going to alleviate overcrowding. |
Part of Clarksburg will be reassigned to Damascus; that is part of the reason for expanding Damascus's capacity. |
A lot of the lower-income areas currently assigned to SV are in the SV walk zone, and all of them are a long way from Crown. |
^^^In addition, there is the stability of assignment factor, whereby areas that just got reassigned to SV in the upcounty boundary study wouldn't then get reassigned away from SV a few years later. |
There are a good number of kids at SV now who really need to be attending Clarksburg. As an SV Germantown parent, I was shocked to see how far some of those kids live from the SVHS community. I thought they were there for a special program. |
Good luck with that. SV is underenrolled no chance |
The bigger issue is that Clarksburg HS is overcrowded and getting moreso each year. More kids needs to be rezoned from Clarksburg, not to Clarksburg. |
The stability factor I believe is in 5 years. By the time these new boundaries take effect 5years will have passed. |
Laytonsville (Gaithersburg HS) could also be reassigned to Damascus. |
The policy doesn't specify how many years. "Options should result in stable assignments for as long a period of time as possible." |
Start with all the kids at Clarksburg HS who live close to Watkins Mill. They should be going to Watkins Mill instead of Clarksburg. Then some of the Hallie Wells kids can go to Damascus. I really think they messed up the upcounty boundary study which was supposed to fix the overcrowding at Clarksburg (it didn't) but instead the BOE decided it was more important to fix the demographic issues between Neelsville and Rocky Hill; and the 3 high schools. |
The SVHS community is the area zoned for SVHS. -another SVHS parent https://gis.mcpsmd.org/ServiceAreaMaps/SenecaValleyHS.pdf |
They've been zoned for Clarksburg since Clarksburg opened in 2006. And people in Clarksburg have been saying, "We don't want those poor kids from over there in our school" since 2006. |
Some in Laytonsville ES already go to Damascus as LES is an odd school of feeding 2 MS. It would be nice if all the ES could stay together for MS. Although... many LES go on to private school to avoid GHS. |
I think most people in Clarksburg are just wondering why they can't go to a school that's less than 3 miles away from them. Anyway, regardless of what happens, I hope they use this opportunity to optimize boundaries now that they are including 11 high schools. There's definite room for improvement. |
