Is it true plain oatmeal, steel cut or otherwise, is not actually a healthy breakfast?

Oats are for horses. That said, it's ok breakfast considering all other crap available.
Make oatmeal with milk and add teaspoonful of butter.

Oatmeal can definitely be part of a healthy and balanced diet. Your colleague is probably into high protein eating, which is the trend right now, and that may be why she reacted this way. But if it is working for you and you have good energy I wouldn’t worry about it. You can add protein to your breakfast if you feel the need.

The other thing with oatmeal is it is a good for to buy organic since oats get sprayed with RoundUp which is nasty stuff. If you’re eating it daily then it’s worth getting organic.

The fact that this colleague commented on your food choices and gave a poor explanation shows that she is probably overly focused on screening food choices and that’s not super healthy either.

Lastly I do think it is good to have an open mind because we do learn new things about nutrition all the time. So good for you for looking into it!

Grains are healthy but having that alone for breakfast will spike your blood sugar like crazy and create hunger later. You need to balance it with some fat and protein for satiety.

Spike your blood sugar!!!!!!

Fill my stomach!!!!! Seriously, I'm sitting here with my coffee, 2/3 cup plain oatmeal and a glass of water. I will soon take a 2-3 mile walk, shower, then eat my 2nd breakfast. Probably eggs, sausage and an apple. I'm 53 and thin with no belly to speak of. My blood sugar is fine.

I eat the ones with added protein. I make them with sunflower seeds or walnuts, and butter.

OP, you didn't say what your health focus is: e.g., somebody trying to lose weight has different food priorities than somebody who's training for a race. If you are trying to lose, switch from the more processed instant oats to steel cut. But neither is unhealthy.

Steel cut oats keep me fuller much longer than 2 eggs!

People are ridiculous. No one ever got fat or diabetes or otherwise unhealthy from eating oatmeal FFS. Sitting around every morning eating donuts and poptarts or bacon and sausage is unhealthy. Oatmeal is great.

Amen. Don’t fix things that aren’t broken.

Oatmeal does not spike blood sugar in most people.

I hate the uncooked taste of overnight oats, but I soak my old fashioned oats for 30 min to overnight in hot water and then microwave them. They turn out creamy, but don’t taste raw.

I have genetic reasons to fear high cholesterol.

Have you tried eating a single serving (which is 1/2 cup) as a side dish to an egg or other protein?

I eat the packets, too, OP and have an idea for you.

Overnight oats are easy to make and easy to grab in the morning. You can change the recipe to suit you. I like to include milk and cut up apples and walnuts. You let it sit overnight and it’s ready to eat in the morning!

I sometimes add flax, cinnamon, blueberries, or honey.

Maybe. She wasn't rude about it though. And she's quite fit and also credentialed.

Credentialed in what?

Bachelor's or master's in dietetics. Then was a SAHM for years. Recently returned to work in a corporate setting.

So she says. I wouldn’t believe any of that. She’s watching too much tik tok. Let me guess she’s wearing a cgm too.

Don’t take health advice from idiots.

What an odd thing to lie about. I would 100% believe her credentials, I would just recognize that even highly credentialed people get stuff wrong. Just think about all the dietitians who were recommending 11 servings of simple carbs a day 30 years ago. Oops!
