It’s incredibly racist that the Olympics have never been hosted by an African country

"They won't let us drink beer!" "They made me turn my gay pride shirt inside out!" A bunch of crying because they had to abide by the rules of the host nation. It would be similar in Africa, except that Qatar is one of the world's richest countries and Africa is the poorest continent. And it's not like Mexico, it doesn't have a big tourist industry with nice hotels. It'll be.. rustic. And far more conservative than most Americans would tolerate.

Have you ever been to Africa? Do you even own a passport?

TBH, not that many Americans have a passport.

The opening ceremony would be amazing!

Mexico has hosted the Olympics (1968).

History starts in the 1980s with the Great Satan, Ronald Reagan.

Bingo.

This. Also, can they build the infrastructure they don't already have without the allocated funds going into the personal pockets of the elites who are supposed to be administering the funds?

Obviously, the racist colonial oppressor nations should pay 100% of the costs of an African country hosting the game. None of that money could possible go missing or get wasted.....

Or maybe, just maybe, people were upset with Qatar being the host country because it is a corrupt, authoritarian s-hole with a massive, oppressed servile underclass. And yes, there's the LGBT thing too. What a shocker that gay soccer fans were unhappy with a government that criminalizes their existence.

I know we like to sh%$ all over Arab countries, but when you think about it, these are some of the few countries of the world where the indigenous population was able to hold onto its own wealth and use it for the good of its own people and it wasn't stolen. Qatari citizens enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the entire world. They get free healthcare, educations, stipends to live off of, high paying jobs, etc. When you walk down the street in Qatar you don't see homeless people or worry about crime. Yeah, the foreigners who work there are an underclass, but absolutely no one has any illusions about that. Similarly resource rich African countries are being plundered to this day by European and American companies and the actual citizens of those countries, the people who live there and should own the wealth, are the one who are in the underclass. To this day if you buy a piece of jewelry or buy a piece of technology or eat so much as a chocolate bar, it was probably produced with the child labor and exploitation of African people. Is a place like Qatar worse than the US because it is actually worse, or because we are not reaping any benefits from exploiting them and our media tell us they are worse? Just some food for thought.

There should be one location for winter games, and one for the summer games, and stop this stupid hosting junk. It's just a boondoggle for the IOC members and hugely expensive for the host countries.

Wow, just when I thought I'd heard of every imaginative way to claim racism. What African country do you think would be a good candidate for hosting the Olympics?

Qatar is using their money to quietly fund terrorism and influence scholarship and anti-Western student groups in American universities. No thanks.

Maybe the African aerospace industries could sponsor the olympics and build all the infrastructure ?

You live in a dream world, read up on these 2 places and realize that can’t happen. It’s like me wishing I was a billionaire.

Americans used their own money to fund the Taliban. America has destroyed multiple countries for no justifiable reason, including removing a democratically elected government in Iran, pretty much screwing over South and Central America perpetually, leveling Iraq because George W. Bush felt like it, bombing Vietnam and Cambodia to bits, etc. In the last 50 years American military intervention has killed at least a million innocent people (probably a super low estimate). It just strains incredulity to criticize another country on this basis. Are we really the good guys?
