"They won't let us drink beer!" "They made me turn my gay pride shirt inside out!" A bunch of crying because they had to abide by the rules of the host nation. It would be similar in Africa, except that Qatar is one of the world's richest countries and Africa is the poorest continent. And it's not like Mexico, it doesn't have a big tourist industry with nice hotels. It'll be.. rustic. And far more conservative than most Americans would tolerate.
Or maybe, just maybe, people were upset with Qatar being the host country because it is a corrupt, authoritarian s-hole with a massive, oppressed servile underclass. And yes, there's the LGBT thing too. What a shocker that gay soccer fans were unhappy with a government that criminalizes their existence.
I know we like to sh%$ all over Arab countries, but when you think about it, these are some of the few countries of the world where the indigenous population was able to hold onto its own wealth and use it for the good of its own people and it wasn't stolen. Qatari citizens enjoy one of the highest standards of living in the entire world. They get free healthcare, educations, stipends to live off of, high paying jobs, etc. When you walk down the street in Qatar you don't see homeless people or worry about crime. Yeah, the foreigners who work there are an underclass, but absolutely no one has any illusions about that. Similarly resource rich African countries are being plundered to this day by European and American companies and the actual citizens of those countries, the people who live there and should own the wealth, are the one who are in the underclass. To this day if you buy a piece of jewelry or buy a piece of technology or eat so much as a chocolate bar, it was probably produced with the child labor and exploitation of African people. Is a place like Qatar worse than the US because it is actually worse, or because we are not reaping any benefits from exploiting them and our media tell us they are worse? Just some food for thought.
