How on earth, in four pages, has Mad Men not appeared. Lots of good suggestions here, but Mad Men is perfection in terms of capturing an era. |
I couldn’t stand The Forsyte Saga for some reason. Couldn’t finish it, which is extremely rare for me. |
And now for something completely different...
Somewhat historically incorrect but beautiful to look at with some period correct details (like Bridgerton) Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung https://g.co/kgs/4vxHa2E It's on Netflix. |

Poldark- great villain beautiful scenery handsome lead |
HOW could I not have mentioned this one! Beautifully filmed, well acted by an excellent cast and good story. (Let us note--we're referring to the recent version, not the one from the 1970s) |
Yes! Also Topsy-Turvy about Gilbert and Sullivan creating The Mikado!! |
Boardwalk Empire |
I posted above about The Way We Live Now, and YES to Topsy Turvy as well! It was an eye-opener -- apparently its true about some Victorians being deliciously hedonistic in private...! |
The Buccaneers. The 2023 version isn't much like the Wharton novels, but if you're in it for the costumes and castles this will do nicely.
Am trying to work my way through The Great, about Catherine the Great, but am not feeling it yet. It's too cute? Yes to North and South, Pride and Prejudice with Firth and Ehle, Poldark (google the lead stripping off his shirt in everything he does), and some of the others here. |
She's been a working actress forever (Contagion, 50 Shades). She's one that I often recognize the face but don't put two-and-two together. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000383/ |
I’m enjoying Monsieur Spade. Set in France in the 1960s, it’s a post-Maltese Falcon Sam Spade story. Gorgeous setting, great costumes, fabulous cars. |
Agree. Incredible period look and feel (1920s gangland Atlantic City). I would add the note for others here, that it's not for everyone--pretty explicit sex and intense violence. More than we usually watch. But the acting was so great and the stories so compelling, it all worked and was in context. Damn, there were some shocker moments. And a lot of fantastic 1920s costuming on both men and women! |
Agree with Downton Abbey, Belgravia, etc. Add to that Boardwalk Empire and Rome. |
The Women of Brewster Place
Lackawanna Blues |
