Write in Bernie then. Oh wait…

She wasn’t elderly.

A brand new Volvo would have forward collision avoidance systems, a ton of beeps and signals warning the driver and ultimately should not even be able to succeed in the scenario reported. So crazy.

I don't understand how this happened. I mean-- I am assuming there's a curb that she had to drive over. What about the emergency brake if she was confused?

Those are some pretty terrible reflexes for a middle aged person to just keep going and going with the foot on the gas. Even in new cars, the brake is the pedal on the left.

I get mad when my fellow older driver run over people at bus stops or sidewalk cafes.

It's not like we don't know how to fix this.

I can't wait until you turn 70. And I hope you remember this post.

The brake/gas confusion thing is real and happens to people of varying ages. There was a great podcast episode about the phenomenon, I think it was Malcolm Gladwell.

Anyway if this ever happens to you, take your foot OFF BOTH PEDALS even if you're absolutely sure your foot is on the brake. Because brains are imperfect and this is a known glitch you have to work around, like how people can leave babies in hot cars by accident.

I think she must have panicked and her brain shut down. She probably pressed even harder on the gas thinking to stop the car. But again, I would guess this all happened in a matter of seconds.

Agreed with other PPs re: the braking system. On my 2023 SUV if I even get too close to a car the brakes go on. I was going straight and the car ahead of me pulled into the left-hand turn lane. As I passed the brakes came on! So weird.

Some people are just terrible drivers. Probably wasn't her first accident.

Has this person not been arrested?
I can’t believe the killer at the Parthenon crash in Chevy Chase wasn’t arrested.

The auto-braking is overridden by continuing to push on the gas pedal.

I miss the hand brake. Now most cars have some software driven parking brake.

Maybe the elderly need smaller cars with less bells and whistles. Like a car version of the Jitterbug phone?

My dad would have fought us for the keys, but he had a health crisis that coincided with the shutdown so it was easy to hold him off until his license expired. He would never pass a road test now.

This incident had a brief mention on this past weekend’s SNL weekend update.

Or a Zoomer writing a text.

Or the 60+ year old driver was texting.

A Volvo owner, so there's that...

What the hell is that supposed to mean? I’m a Volvo owner who goes to WF damn you.
