New Home Choice: Is Oakton High Really Better than Chantilly?

No high school in 20171 Oak Hill/Herndon. Kids are split into four different high schools: Chantilly, Oakton, Westfield and South Lakes.

Oakton is best but traffic is bad. Also expensive.
Chantilly is good but way too crowded.
South Lakes is average. And it’s an IB school.
Westfield is average. Down to earth.

I find all the racial/ethnic comparisons between these two schools somewhat humorous. Chantilly is 38% Asian, Oakton is 31% Asian. Chantilly is 5% Black, Oakton is 6% Black. I assure you, you won't notice these subtle differences in an enormous school like either one of these. This is people convincing themselves that one school is "more diverse and welcoming" than the other based on wishful thinking. Pretty sure most students' experiences at either one of these top-ranked high schools in one of the most educated and wealthy areas of the richest country in the world will be just fine.

You seem to be good at percentages. Can you please provide similar statistics of Race composition in each of the Sports team for the above schools?

What a bizarre follow-up comment.

Oakton is about 45% white, and Chantilly is about 35% white. There is a difference, especially in the AP/Honors classes.

Chantilly is 40 % percent Asian, not 38. The ap classes at Chantilly are often around 70 % percent Asian

Good. The white kids are the worst. So entitled. We prefer Indians and Asians.

So what’s the difference? Chantilly is about 40% Asian and Oakton is about 31% Asian. So Oakton is about 76% White/Asian - the two cohorts historically most likely to enroll in advanced courses - and Chantilly is about 75% White/Asian.

Then come to Chantilly HS.

My son is white and in very advanced classes at Chantilly. In the majority of his AP and post-AP courses, he is one of 3 or 4 white students, most of the other 30 students are East/South Asian.

Asian kids are probably the super-majority in post-AP classes (and there aren’t that many such classes at schools other than TJ) at Oakton, too. It does appear that a substantially larger percentage of White kids at Oakton enroll in AP courses than is the case for White kids at Chantilly.

I guess that’s good if you’re Asian and want a school where the Asian kids are clearly at the top of the academic totem pole. Otherwise it’s not much of a selling point for Chantilly.

I live in Oak Hill and know kids at all of the 4 high schools in the area. There is no real difference. I wouldn’t pick a house based on which HS, especially as boundaries will change. Pick one you like in the neighborhood/lifestyle that suits you. FWIW my kid goes to one of the “less desirable” schools among these 4 but I don’t see “less desirable” outcomes among his similarly situated upperclassmen going off to college soon. Family matters most, always.

Oak Hill kids are split between Chantilly and Oakton. If you're in Emerald Chase or whatever, that's not Oak Hill, that's Floris. If you go to South Lakes, you're in Reston
