I hate living in Oak Hill and having my kid's school 20-25 minutes away, when there are two high schools that are 5-10 minutes away; however I have heard Chantilly is very crowded. Oakton has some very entitled rich kids, Chantilly student body seems a little more diverse and welcoming.

No high school in 20171 Oak Hill/Herndon. Kids are split into four different high schools: Chantilly, Oakton, Westfield and South Lakes.

Oakton is best but traffic is bad. Also expensive.
Chantilly is good but way too crowded.
South Lakes is average. And it’s an IB school.
Westfield is average. Down to earth.

Oak Hill kids are split between Chantilly and Oakton. If you're in Emerald Chase or whatever, that's not Oak Hill, that's Floris. If you go to South Lakes, you're in Reston

PP was right, and here you are creating confusion with false information. Find another thread.

I assure you, you won't notice these subtle differences in an enormous school like either one of these. This is people convincing themselves that one school is "more diverse and welcoming" than the other based on wishful thinking. Pretty sure most students' experiences at either one of these top-ranked high schools in one of the most educated and wealthy areas of the richest country in the world will be just fine.

Oakton is about 45% white, and Chantilly is about 35% white. There is a difference, especially in the AP/Honors classes.

So what’s the difference? Chantilly is about 40% Asian and Oakton is about 31% Asian. So Oakton is about 76% White/Asian - the two cohorts historically most likely to enroll in advanced courses - and Chantilly is about 75% White/Asian.

My son is white and in very advanced classes at Chantilly. In the majority of his AP and post-AP courses, he is one of 3 or 4 white students, most of the other 30 students are East/South Asian.

Asian kids are probably the super-majority in post-AP classes (and there aren’t that many such classes at schools other than TJ) at Oakton, too. It does appear that a substantially larger percentage of White kids at Oakton enroll in AP courses than is the case for White kids at Chantilly.

Exactly. I can't speak to high schools yet, because my children aren't there. But we are at an adjacent feeder elementary school to OHS and the AAP class has 1 white child, and almost everyone else is Asian. So I think this is not unique to Chantilly HS. Also, I'm not sure why this matters? But since everyone is trying one-up each other on how few white kids are in their classes, there you go.

We are Asian and chose Oakton to have more diversity and less cutthroat competition from the Asian kids. We are not helicopter parents.

We have a fantastic administration as well. No matter the type of kid you have they WILL find a niche at the school, just due to the sheer amount of student groups.

When people say Chantilly is over-crowded does that mean kids are in portable classrooms, and what are the plans to address the over-crowding? I saw someone mentioning expanding Centreville. Does that mean Chantilly kids will be forced to attend Centreville? I am looking for housing in the Chantilly area (going through a divorce). Thanks!

There are 14 modular classrooms at Chantilly in a modular building. plus Three trailers. Hopefully we get a renovation soon( 24-25) if we use our influence correctly.

Yes, the most likely scenario is that once Centreville is renovated and expanded to 3000 seats several hundred Chantilly kids will get moved. They could either get moved directly to Centreville or they could get moved to Westfield with part of Westfield moved to Centreville. There are no plans to renovate or expand Chantilly any time soon.

Which Chantilly kids would get moved?

I don't think anyone knows (it's all conjecture), but most likely are the ones geographically closest to Centreville.

Our school community will do everything that is possible to make sure we are on the 2024 or 2025 bond. We are willing to go to great legnths to fight for the renovation. We cant let a renovation queue and staff dictate this anymore

I think PP was saying she wanted to get away from all the Asian families/tiger parents at Chantilly.
