Where would YOU say DD is from?

When people ask me where I’m from, I say NY. Born in Manhattan, moved to the southwest, west coast, Florida and New England before my family settled in westchester county when I was 11. If people ask me where I grew up, I say “here and there”.

I am not sure anyone has addressed this yet but I assume your daughter presents as black. So in southern VA if someone asks "where are you from" that can be a loaded question. Surely even in the DC area she has dealt with this, unfortunately (and I am sure your DH has too which is why his answer is complicated).

She should say she is from DC and can say that she lived just outside DC in Northern VA before that. Some people, rudely or ignorantly, will mean "where is your dad FROM" which you guys should discuss how to approach. She could say "My dad's family is from Ghana" or "Why do you ask?" or anything in between.

Good luck with the move. Kids are resilient, and I hope she likes her new city.

All you really need to answer is “not here” ….because then the inevitable question is “what HS did you (or your parents if you’re too young) go to.”

But if pressed, I’d go with Northern VA or the DC area.

In RVA, we have born-heres, been-heres (gen 15-20+ yrs and often requires marrying a born-here!) and weirdos like me….a back-here. And then there’s everyone else/the come-heres. Last group has no legitimacy at all. 🤪
