This is overstating things a bit IMO. All major cities have their version of "prestigious private school," but you have to concede that NYC is its own animal and not entirely interchangeable with DC and Boston.

But no one really gives a shit.

Clearly enough people do — it’s why we have DCUM.

Doesn’t like half of NCS end up at UMD VT and UVA? Fine schools but those are irrelevant degree mills to high brow New Yorkers.

UVA has a good reputation in the Northeast

Brearley is a rung above any private in DC.

Absolutely not. No DC private could ever compare to a NYC private. No one outside of 20008 has ever heard of NCS.

I only know of it bc Honor Huntzberger went there.

Hmm...mmm.

Among certain sets and demographics, people can be very aware of the leading private schools in all the major and even midsize cities. NCS and St. A fall into this category for DC. As do Gilman and Bryn Mawr in Baltimore and so on. You'd be surprised. Brearley would be the NYC contribution to this phenomena as does Winsor in Boston.

Eh, NYC has them in greater volume. In addition to Brearley, Chapin and Spence are considered powerhouses that are better-known than NCS or Holton-Arms. (And yes, outside of DCUM, Holton is considered on-par with NCS.) My brother and I went to Big 3 schools, and our mom admitted we'd have gone to much more prestigious schools if only we'd grown up in NYC.

But it really shouldn't matter when it comes to shelling out money for private schools. The point should be providing your child with the best possible education in an environment where they'll flourish.
