Anyone know anything about Brearley School in NYC? Son is dating

Anonymous
Why is your DC-based son dating a girl in NYC? Why do you care about how fancy her school is? This whole post seems like a thinly-veiled way of bragging about your proximity to a wealthy, elite family.

NCS is not on the level of Brearley.

None of the DC schools are on the level of the top NYC privates. The only schools that can compare to the NYC privates are the New England boarding schools and perhaps Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles.

HW in LA is certainly in the same tier as Brearley, if a very different kind of school (co-ed, large, very strong sports); NCS is not in the same conversation at all.

My Brearley alumna friend expected her parents to pay for their grandchildren's private school tuition (also Brearley and another private in NYC). The parents are well to do but I wouldn't say wealthy. Don't know if that helps your son's outlook on this girl's expectations in life.

What's the girls name? I'll Google her for you

But as private schools go, it is very generous with financial aid. It also has a reputation for rejecting girls who are legacies from wealthy families who are not particularly smart themselves. Decades ago, it was the "blue stocking" school. (See this is you aren't familiar with that term.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluestocking ) It admitted Jews at a time when some of the WASPy private schools did not.

It was NEVER the kind of school parents enrolled their daughters in with the hope that they would meet a nice rich boy and marry him shortly after her coming out party. It was the kind of school that wealthy parents who valued education and wanted their daughters to be as well educated as their sons chose.

So, yes, most--though certainly not all--Brearley girls are from wealthy families, but it also has a rep as an academic pressure cooker. College matriculation is impressive. https://www.brearley.org/student-life/upper-school/college-advising

I went to Brearley, and this feels like the most accurate thing I’ve read here.

Very. I think they send the most students to Harvard of any school in Anerica or close to it.

True. Not all are wealthy but almost all are super smart.

Girls go to Chaplin or Science to find a hubby.

Which schools do parents send their DDs to with hopes that they’ll hook a rich husband?

Expensive, more conservative schools with a larger number of men than women.

This, oddly enough, is also the way for men to hook a rich wife. Except the ratio can be a more like 55 men - 45 women. If the women outnumber men, men tend to play the field, and women allow themselves to be played. If the men outnumber the women, they try to lock things down.

Because it’s college and lots of people date people from other geographic areas? I mean, it’s either a stupid question that OP could have googled for themself or it’s a humble brag, but asking why a kid from DC is dating a girl from NY while they’re in college isn’t very bright either.

No, I've had girls at both (NCS and Brearley) and they are very much at the same level academically. I might even given NCS the edge.

What Brearley does have is far more monied and powerful families. So it feels (and is) more elite.

That's a pretty low bar, though.
