Has anyone started a completely new life?

This. I lived in the DMV for a long time before having kids and was content. It wasn't perfect but I had a good life and made the most of the opportunities here.

Something about raising kids here feels wrong. I still make the best of it but there is this feeling in my heart like I have to get us out of here. I need to move before it's too late and my kids roots are here. I will not stay once they are grown so I don't want it to be "home" to them. I'm fine coming back to visit but I want our family home to be somewhere else.

100%. I am so happy we raised kids in a nicer part of the world, with slow life and a lot of nature. I am pretty sure my kids would be in therapy if they grew up in NOVA. However, we all live happily in DC metro area now with adult kids nearby and enjoy this area very much.

I don't want to hijack OPs (great!) thread, but can you share more about why you think NOVA or the DC area is hard for kids? My kids are still young, but I have been having this feeling lately but am so scared to move anywhere else (mainly job related). And I am also scared I will decide too late that this area is not for us and have to pull them from their schools and community in the late elementary years.

DB is that you?

Yes, for reasons I can't go into. Changed my name, moved far away, and started working at a Cinnabon.

Yes, I left my DH and my three and six-year-old twins (2 sets) about four years ago.

I changed my name to Tiffany Tostada, bought some red sparkly platform stilettos, moved to Tallahassee, and started a very lucrative career in pole dancing.

The only thing I regret is not leaving sooner.

I'm a different poster, but we moved away from the DMV area when our kids were small. We found people to be very uptight, very passive-aggressive, they stand on ceremony (which I guess is part of being passive-aggressive), competitive, and like they couldn't figure out how to get ahead in life without stepping on other people. We didn't want our kids growing up around that, we didn't want to be around it, and we didn't want our kids thinking that's normal.

The problem is this is standard competitive behavior in any large city. Some places are even worse! The DMV does not have a monopoly on competitive parenting.

No one in my new life (except dh) knows about my old life. I never return to where I came from. I've been happy living this way for 15+ years. He hasn't found me since and this guy was relentless, stalking me for nearly 10 years.

I’m so sorry. My mom had a stalker. We were so relieved when he finally died.

Also went to law school (so weird that so many of us did that!), also shook an accent, also changed my name, and only my DH knows the truth. None of my friends do. It's been 30 years and I have no regrets.

My friends mom after her husband left her and she did a few years of the single mom thing, abandoned her two kids to love to another country and become a professional. She never can back.

I'm from here. I tell my college age kids to NOT move back. I hope they agree and I will follow one of them.
