Open house attire/conspicuous consumption

Anonymous
It’s all relative.

You feel someone is flashy for wearing a Cartier/Gucci. I don’t think it glassy at all. To me I think a Birken is flashy. But if you have 5 of them, then to that person it is not.

So when you call people flashy, yo I have to look at it from your perspective.

So you judge a person who shows up to open house in a Bentley or high end Mercedes as flashy.

The. The person who shows up in a 5 year old CRV (we have one) may be looking at your Audi A4 or Tesla and think you are being flashy with your car?

And yea, we have an old CRV and 250k suv. Sometimes we drive the CRV to school…

My wife wears many of the items you mention here on a daily basis to her DC based political job. It’s just part of her normal every day look. Cartier bracelets, Van Cleef necklace or so, some sort of Gucci shoes and maybe even an Chanel/Dior bag among other stuff.

So when we went to open houses, this is “normal” everyday clothing for her. It is not special and she is not trying any harder than any other day of her normal life. What she is wearing is basically a blouse and maybe designer jeans.

What “we” saw as annoying was women dressed up like they were going to a gala. High heels, fancy dress, and of course a full face of a makeup, eyeliner like they were going to a fancy Xmas party. And what’s worse is when you see a women with a full face of heavy makeup on a Saturday morning tour.

Also, the truly rich people, more so than us, are probably the ones wearing Nike sneakers and nothing designer at all. Or possible wearing something high style that is unbranded from the outside that may be worth 10k and you would never know it by liking. But the wealthy “in” crowd can figure what you are wearing.

Kid if like truly wealthy people would never buy a LV bag with LV all over it like college teens do to show off they have a LV bag, they would buy some designer bag with no outside branding worth 15k.

When she gets really dressed I

And she has the 20k bags, 30k plus Cartier/Van Cleef/ other designers you have heard of jewelry that she never wears except some formal event of some sort. All the stuff mentioned above she wears routinely is her basic “cheap” stuff

Dude, it’s so weird you’re on here bragging about your wife’s clothes and accessories. I’d be mortified if my husband did that.

These circles are NOT fashionable, PP. The things OP describes are conservatism at its finest. It has nothing to do with political affiliation, BTW. It's the conservatism exhibited by people who have arrived to a certain social status and whose goals are to preserve those advantages, either for life, or while they look for another circle in which to hoist themselves. It's the opposite of taking risks, so naturally it's never going to be trendy.

I think I’d rather them than you though.

I wonder why you feel threatened.

NP. I don’t think they were threatened, they were just annoyed by your didactic tone. You don’t need to address your screed to “PP.” You quoted them, we all understand you’re responding to them.

Extremely wealthy people show up dressed like bums and I like that.

Many of the other moms are wearing conspicuous designer items. I’ve seen more Chanel flats, Gucci bags, Van Cleef bracelets/necklaces, Hermes belts, and Cartier love bracelets in the past few weeks than I’ve ever seen in my life.

Is this typical for these types of parents, or are they just dressing like this for the open houses to signal wealth and status?

No one is “signaling” anything. This is the crowd you have chosen.

I have no idea what open houses have already happened that OP would have attended. Sidwell? NCS? There's some money there but actually not a whole lot of flashy people. STA's is happening this weekend and that might be the wealthiest school in the DMV. However we are there as two feds and my kid fits in just fine. The wealthiest families we know at the school (I'm thinking of a dozen with HHI of $10+ million or even $20+ million) are not flashy at all. There is absolutely, 100% truth that it's new money or those around $1 million in HHI that spend the most on brand names things.

+1 if your DC gets in, attend the admitted student events and interact with current parents - that will give you the best feel. A lot of these displays come from a place of insecurity.

At the top schools the admitted students will be from a total mix of money and no money. Many of the flashy will not get in but some of the children of the feds will.

So it all seems to balance out in the end when the student body is actually created. That's a better time to actually size up the school.

Why do I feel like this post was actually written by a woman and not her “husband”. ??

Men who wear conspicuous branding are nauseating. More than the women who do. But both are nauseating. I love a beautiful Chanel suit. But a sweater with the word CHANEL or GUCCI plastered across the front is so cheesy! Don’t care how much it costs.
Anonymous
I wore my love bracelet to tours because I don’t take it off ever. But I purposefully did not wear my other cartier and van cleef bracelets because I didn’t want to present like that. Maybe I should dust them off?!

That is silly. You realize most of them won't end up being accepted to the schools?
