$18 for a freakin’ B.L.T. sandwich? These cafes and restaurants have lost their minds

I’m in the Bay Area - avocado toast plus poached egg is $18. This is at a coffee place not a sit down restaurant. It’s bananas.

What year are you posting from where Coors Light is $5 and craft beer is $10.

We stopped eating out or getting take out once or twice a week. Now we eat out once a month.

It isn't just the BLT its the drink that you also get that is $4.50 so that is $22.50. Then there is tax so that is 10% so plus $2.25 for a total of $24.75. Then they turn the screen around so you tip 20% for a take out BLT and a drink. So that is $29.70.

Um. no I am not paying $30 for a take out BLT. I bring my lunch from home now. The other day I forgot my lunch so I went to the supermarket and bought a soda and a baguette, cheese, ham, and mustard and made my own sandwich and made one for a co-worker as well. I took the leftover home and it still was way cheaper than $30.

There are 3-4 restaurants near my house that have food good enough that I am willing to pay for it, everything else tastes like I could have made it at home. I understand why prices have gone up, but at this point I just can’t justify spending that kind of money on something that doesn’t taste that good.

This is where we are too. I understand that costs are up, but my takeout/restaurant budget just isn’t big enough to justify food we don’t really like.

3-4 actually sounds high.

The sad thing is that my faith in local places has really fallen and I'm so much less likely to go to them now because quality has declined as prices have skyrocketed. When we get take out, we have a couple local chains (Sundevich, Roaming Rooster) that we like and I feel their prices are still okay. But otherwise, I often just suggest we do Chipotle because their quality and prices are consistent. No, it's not amazing food but it's also never terrible and I can get a burrito bowl that will produce leftovers for less than OP's sad little BLT sandwich.

I think inflation has probably been really good for corporate chain restaurants because they have greater ability to keep costs downs. I certainly see my own eating habits migrating that way, largely for financial reasons.

Thank the captains of industry, who continue to price gauge for every industry and every level. That said, my husband and I eat out very, very sparingly now because it has gotten very expensive, and we’re already spending so much more at the grocery store anyway.

You have to pay the higher prices for the higher minimum wage. That’s it. You can’t pay more unless you collect more.
