$18 for a freakin’ B.L.T. sandwich? These cafes and restaurants have lost their minds

Anonymous
I am so done with eating out. I honestly thought the cafe cashier was joking or maybe thought I said two sandwiches.

Yes. Same. I just saw that a chicken wrap at a lunch place near my job costs $16. I thought it was a typo but no. $6 for a slice of pizza.

It's a shame for small businesses and all of us that costs are rising and driving away customers. I'm very concerned that as these close shop, power is being even faster concentrated in the hands of the few international companies.

But I also can't justify paying $16 for a sandwich to support small shops. To keep the "vote with the wallet" going, I'm buying direct from farmers with good practices, like Polyface Farms.

Yes, I have stopped going out for lunch except rare occasions. I am not thrilled that I have to make my lunch everyday but I do feel better and have lost a bit of weight.

Don’t forget the 25% tip for the cashier!

Fixed that for you.

I don't know anything about their "xenophobia." But I'm foreign born, not a citizen. Their farming practices are excellent. That's rare and worth a lot. I bet the positive impact of their work far outweighs the negative.

Where was this $18 BLT? That is outrageous!

We pretty much stopped eating out because restaurant prices are crazy expensive.

I was joking with a friend the other day that being overweight will soon become a status symbol of wealth

The kids in their 20s and DINKs will pay $18 for sandwiches, and these stores will be fine. The older generation will bring lunches from home, just like older people always did.

Some will, most will fold. It seems like the lunch places that used to be crowded are compensating for a lack of volume with insane price increases and then wondering why the decrease in volume is accelerating

Yep, agree! I’ve been cooking way more at home. We used to eat out 3-4x a week, a combination of take out or dining-in at a restaurant (on weekends).

Now we do 1x a week and it’s usually pizza

I just do Jersey Mikes. The quality is about the same as most downtown delis (the health department score is probably higher) and the price is about what I used to pay

It’s $9 for a regular, which is modestly sized. You could do worse, but certainly not a bargain.
