FCYBL winter travel or year-round AAU team?

Well, yes. Because its all volunteers. No one is paid and its a long season with a lot of hours put in. Who else would be coaching, if not parents?

On the girls side, AAU coaches and just volunteers. Reading this, the boys side seems nuts.

Why would AAU Coaches (who are paid) be volunteering their time to coach a County team, unless they have some angle (like the "county" team is really just their "AAU" team, and they are using the org to get free gym space?

Because AAU is almost dead during county basketball season. So to get their team playing, they sign up for county.

But how do they "sign up for county"? They need to be selected as the coach from McLean, or BRYC, or whatever, and then they need to hold tryouts and choose a team that matches the assigned zip codes. AAU players come from all over, they can't just pick a team that matches their kids.
