FCYBL winter travel or year-round AAU team?

This all just seems very restrictive and old fashioned. We live in Centreville in zip code 20120. Where can my kids play as in-network? Am I understanding right that they can play anywhere they want to out-of-network if the coach agrees to take them? 7th and 8th grade boys if it matters.

You can go to both SYA and CYA

We never had parent coaches in AAU.

Well, yes. Because its all volunteers. No one is paid and its a long season with a lot of hours put in. Who else would be coaching, if not parents?

On the girls side, AAU coaches and just volunteers. Reading this, the boys side seems nuts.

Does FPYC have a good program on the boys' side? Or is BRYC better?

Yes to both though "good" is coach dependent. BRYC has more teams per age group so your kid may have a better chance to make a team, depending on the number of boys who show up for tryouts. BRYC also has more division 1 teams for more skilled players. Many FPYC teams play in divisions 2 and 3.

BUT... the best option is for your son to tryout within your home zip code as first priority. If he tries out for a team not in your home zip code, the coach must petition for a zip code exception if he really wants your son. teams only allowed 2 zip code exceptions. Keep in mind, coaches probably recruited during summer and already offered zip code exceptions to other kids because both FPYC and BRYC sponsor travel teams to play in summer leagues, namely Fairfax Stars league.

My son has played for FPYC in summer because zip codes don't matter when playing in non-FCYBL leagues. Many of his teammates also did not reside in FPYC home zip codes. On my son's team, I am pretty certain the coaches already offered their 2 zip code exceptions to one of their favorite "big" summer players.

+1. I would like info on Chantilly, Southwestern or Burke Athletic for 7th grade boys (we are in Clifton). The Burke team is only have the one tryout which makes me think it is one of those pre-selected teams. All the tryouts seem to be the same week which is difficult.

For development purposes I would consider just getting your kid in the gym with someone you trust to develop it will pay dividends!

Your goal should be who and what program is going to teach my son how to play the game from an IQ perspective. The quicker that education happens the quicker you will see the kid pass up their peers.

This guy Tau Hamilton who is the head coach for Virginia Academy runs a great program for skills concepts and pick up basketball for middle school kids.

I would check him out he also will guide you through the process of what’s best he knows everyone on the basketball community. He used to coach Herndon FCYBL back in the day and TTO as well as the Washington warriors 3SSB team.

Why would AAU Coaches (who are paid) be volunteering their time to coach a County team, unless they have some angle (like the "county" team is really just their "AAU" team, and they are using the org to get free gym space?

Because AAU is almost dead during county basketball season. So to get their team playing, they sign up for county.
