How would you react if a burglar entered your home when your children are present?

so you'd like go down stairs and shoot them proactively? If they were on their way out the door with 3 ipads they'd grabbed from your counter...would you still shoot them? or is it more if they started coming to where you were you'd shoot them? some people seem so eager for an excuse to shoot someone when most burglars are just taking the $1000 uppababy out of the garage to resell and aren't armed or a threat to you

Certainly I would shoot. They picked a wrong house. And that’s not my problem.

Great. So you kill some unarmed teen, and his dangerous older brother comes next week to match your escalation.

I’d shoot him too. I don’t understand so you would just give in?

Someone coming into a house looking to shoot people is called a murderer, not a burglar. Random people breaking into a house looking to an excuse to kill someone is very very rare, even general even burglars are not looking for this to happen and would rather grab some things unseen and exit with no interaction

you should be embarrassed by your idiocy. https://www.statista.com/statistics/251914/number-of-robberies-in-the-us-by-weapon/

I can't get my mind around that - someone is literally on the way out the door and you'd still shoot them. Soldier in combar have major PTSD over killing someone and you'd be happy to have the flimsy excuse despite their being no threat to you any longer

Dp. Yes.

DP - yes. I'd absolutely "give in" and not attempt to take someones life over an ipad if they were on the way out the door and no threat to me. Someone has stolen my bike from my garage, no part of me wants to kill that person

I'd rush to my kids and figure a way to get them out of the house whether through window or door. Small house so time is of the essence.

goodness. only white women think this way. burglars with guns is only an inch away from killing you or raping you (then killing you). this can't be real

I don’t think the OP’s husband’s response means he is a coward. OP, does he tend to be in the extreme end of “practical”? There may be some logic there that we just don’t quite get.

But I don’t get why he needs to leave the hose to call 911. I would grab the kids *while* calling 911 and hide them/ hide with them. I don’t know what leaving the house would do.

Okay, you do you. You are a better person than me. Just don't break-in to my house.

Well my friend you should be embarrassed by your grasp of the english language. Robbery BY DEFINITELY is violent. Robbery is taking someone literally off another person - so yes usually some threat and weapon is involved. Breaking into your house to steal your purse off the table while your family is upstairs is NOT the same thing and your stats related to robbery prove nothing.

"Robbery is considered a violent crime, where someone takes something of value directly from someone else. Burglary is considered a property crime, involving entry into a residence or building illegally, without permission, with the intent to commit a crime."

This is a good reminder for the "get a dog" crew. Most dogs will just roll over to get belly rubs. Or you designer dog may be valuable and it will be stolen too...

Fair enough, as documented by the recent video of a Golden Retriever doing just that. But the prospective home invader doesn’t know the dog’s personality and if the people next door or across the street are easier, well, they’ll get the invasion.

this is so bizarre...most people stealing your bike out of your garage aren't rapists or murderers. Do those people exist - absolutely, obviously, no one is saying they don't. But they're not one in the same. Lots of teenage punks steal bikes or phones....large majority go through life without raping or killing someone

So, we should ask what their intention is first - burglar or robber or rapist or killer or any combo of those? Then decide whether you are going to let them go or shoot?? Am I getting your logic correct?

You don't need large majority. It only takes one to rape/kill.

I would wait in our upstairs hallway. To get to the kids room or the master, you have to go up the stairs. If you line prone in the hallway, you would have a very easy shot before the burglar knows what is happening and with buckshot at short range, accuracy is not really an issue

Have you ever patterned your shotgun with “buckshot at close range?” Because the pattern from buckshot (or any other load) from a 28 inch skeet gun with a choked barrel will open very little at indoor range. Even an 18 inch “riot gun” with an improved cylinder will be very tight at that range. Television and movies aside, shotguns do not spew pellets all over the place. They still need to be aimed.

Most burglars have no interest in interacting with people. You just have to be less attractive than the neighbor’s house. Light up the exterior, cut back bushes and shrubs, lock doors and windows, and no there is no need to discuss plans for a home invasion with an 11 yo.

Hear noise: get out. Nothing you own is worth it.
