How would you react if a burglar entered your home when your children are present?

so you'd like go down stairs and shoot them proactively? If they were on their way out the door with 3 ipads they'd grabbed from your counter...would you still shoot them? or is it more if they started coming to where you were you'd shoot them? some people seem so eager for an excuse to shoot someone when most burglars are just taking the $1000 uppababy out of the garage to resell and aren't armed or a threat to you

Certainly I would shoot. They picked a wrong house. And that’s not my problem.

Great. So you kill some unarmed teen, and his dangerous older brother comes next week to match your escalation.

That’s not my problem. Older brother will meet Jesus, too.

Someone coming into a house looking to shoot people is called a murderer, not a burglar. Random people breaking into a house looking to an excuse to kill someone is very very rare, even general even burglars are not looking for this to happen and would rather grab some things unseen and exit with no interaction

goodness. only white women think this way. burglars with guns is only an inch away from killing you or raping you (then killing you). this can't be real

I’m a white woman and my family has all races and ethnicities. We all have guns to protect our homes. It’s not a white person thing.

the possibility of a home invasion is very real, even in nice neighborhoods.

My DD is highly anxious, and she talks about what would happen if someone broke into the house. So, I have to go through scenarios with her.

How many people do you personally know have been victims of a home invasion? I know of NONE and I live in a nice neighborhood in West LA. There have been break-ins while people were away, thefts of bikes, outdoor decor and catalytic converters, but no home invasions. I have a house alarm, well-lit home and driveway, and lock up consistently. We do not drive luxury vehicles, wear expensive jewelry, accessories or clothing that would draw the attention of thieves. Maybe the answer to the anxiety of child left alone is to make sure they are alone less?

I’m the new poster. There are many.

My estranged cousin did 9 years for armed robbery after him and his brother broke into an elderly woman’s home. The didn’t expect anyone to be home, and ended up beating her after she started screaming. He then went on to do more prison time for trying to burn down a church. He also tried burning down his ex-girlfriends house.

Shoot on site. Criminals shouldn’t be protected. You forfeit your right to life once you break in and risk someone else’s.

I have several military family members and my brother hunts and builds his own guns. I’ve taken numerous classes for gun shooting and safety, as well as self-defense classes. I still would use my AR-15 as it’s been proven to be the most effective as a defense weapon.

My husband is former military and also heavily trained in shooting. We would use guns as our top defense, besides our alarm system.

I don’t care. I don’t think criminals deserve protection. My duty is to protect myself and my children. Same as my husbands. We will use any means necessary to protect ourselves over some criminal.

Most criminals reoffend. You forfeit your right to life when you start endangering others.

What is “sick” about a person being willing to become and remain competent with a firearm to defend themselves and their family from becoming a statistic at the hands of a criminal psychopath, or a group of them since they tend to run in packs? And the silly knee-jerk reaction to the mere mention of an AR15. The fact is that the projectile fired by an AR15 is less likely to penetrate building structures than the buckshot referred to by a previous poster.

This. An AR-15 was proven to be the best firearm for home defense. You can get a more accurate aim than with a handgun, increasing your chances of hitting your target. This was true for many women.

Anyone who calls it a “ military weapon” is completely uneducated. An AR-15 is not used in the military because you will be killed in 15 minutes.

I have an. Alarm for all windows and doors. It is "Armed away" when we aren't home and "Armed Stay" when at home. I suppose they could get in if they crouch on floor like a cat or dog.

You need help for your anxiety OP.
You probably damaged your daughter.

I don’t understand. What is wrong about shooting intruders? If it ain’t your house, don’t go in unauthorized.

Anonymous wrote:OP here. We have thought about getting a gun, but decided against it, for the following reason: in the past six months at my daughter's stressful elite private school three children committed suicides (unrelated to each other), each of them with the gun of their parents.

Besides, if the gun is kept fairly secured and hidden, there might not be enough time to get it.

Kids don’t need a gun to commit suicide. There are articles that have been written about 12 year olds hanging themselves in their room. The number one reason is bullying. Social media is another constant form of harassment telling kids to kill themselves. There are also other aspects and complicated issues, it’s not just one thing.

There are so many posters here who talk about their elite private schools and their above average super athlete and top 1% of their class. Some of it exaggerated but you have to wonder if it trickles down to the kids and they feel superior somehow. Maybe start to bully in middle school because a girl doesn’t have any crocs. Or a boy can’t run very well. Parents of bullies need to take full responsibility if something like that happens.

I will shoot for sure. Not sure if my aim will be "that" good.

There is absolutely nothing sick about killing someone that's broken into your home. They didn't break in for a peanut butter sandwich. It is reasonable to assume that anyone that is breaking into homes is there to murder, rape, and steal. You kill them and protect your family and your life. Civilization depends on certain rules and norms. You break those rules. You face the consequences. This is America. It's a violent country with violent people. It's reasonable for people to take steps to protect themselves.

I grew up in a suburb right outside of the city. Last one in at night locked the door. We never locked our doors in college. My kids are growing up with unlocked doors. No guns, no living life in fear. It’s not worth it.
